The Thickening Sky

Kevin is checking the tension on the south piling mooring ring as the clouds darken over the island. Jenny sits on a crate near the workbench, wrapping her ankle in fresh gauze while watching the barometer drop. The air has turned heavy and still, signaling the coming storm front.

Kevin tested the south piling bolts and found three millimeters of play, tightening the come-along an inch. Jenny inspected the hardware and confirmed only one 150mm stainless bolt remains, with 10mm rod stock available but requiring threading. The shortwave crackled to life unexpectedly, a voice cutting through static at an odd hour.

South piling's holding. Barely. Got two turns on the come-along if she shifts tonight.

Check the come-along tension on the south piling mooring ring, then walk back to the workbench and set the barometer reading in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Three mill play yesterday. Tonight it'll be more. Come-along's got maybe two turns left before the chain binds. If the ring pulls the mortise again, the whole south face goes.

Check the bolts again. I don't want the whole jetty shearing when the tide peaks.

Tighten the wrap on my ankle, wince as the fabric brushes the infection, and sketch a quick diagram of the dock's shift in the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If that way goes, the wayhy goes with it, and I'm stuck here with a rotting leg.

Checked at first light. Three mill play. Turned the come-along an inch. Bolts are the weak link — originals in rotten core.

Walk to the south end of the dock, crouch at the sister knee joint, and test each through-bolt with the 19mm wrench, feeling for movement in the timber.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The sister knee took the load last time but the original bolts are still in soft timber. If the ring shears, the whole south face goes with it.

Get the heavy-duty washers from the shed. We need to go through to the greenheart heartwood.

Stand up slowly, leaning my weight on my good leg, and move toward the workbench to grab the hardware kit.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wood is too soft for the bolts, the whole thing will pull through under the surge.

One 150mm stainless left. Two used on east shutter knee. Got 10mm rod in the shed — can cut threads if the die holds.

Walk back to the workshop shed, pull the hardware drawer, and check the thread die set and remaining 10mm stainless rod.

💭 peek at the thought
Greenheart sister plank's bolted to the face. Heartwood's behind it. Need longer bolts — 150mm stainless with washers and nylocs. One left from the shutter repair. Used two on the east knee. That's it unless I cut thread on the steel rod.

🌿 Jenny23:42

Leave the die set out. I need to see if that rod is salvageable before the rain starts.

Grab my notebook from the bench and follow him to the shed, limping slightly with every step.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't cut those threads, I'll have to use the shorter bolts and hope for the best.
