Jenny sits on the steps wrapping her swollen ankle while the barometer drops to 990 hPa. Kevin watches the thickening cloud layer over the flat sky, feeling the shift in wind moving in from the north.

Kevin checked the south piling at first light and found it solid with no movement. He returned to the cottage and powered on the shortwave radio for the 0700 sked, but the set only produced heavy static. Jenny checked the rain tank and logged 397 litres, then noted the barometer had fallen to 989 hPa. She began to debride her ankle and apply a fresh sea beet poultice, but the pain was sharp and the swelling had not receded overnight.
