Midday radio sked and shutter check

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table. The 1900 sked is hours off. Kevin has the threaded 10mm rod ready as a spare through-bolt. Jenny's ankle is wrapped, elevated, the poultice steaming faintly. The barometer reads 990 hPa, steady. Outside, the wind has not yet backed west. They eat cold corned beef from the tin and watch the grey sea.

The warm rain continues in steady intervals, drumming against the cottage roof as the air pressure continues to drop. The tide is rising quickly, lapping at the lower steps of the dock and beginning to cover the rocks. Jenny sits on the porch, her ankle throbbing despite the sea beet poultice, while Kevin monitors the barometer, noting the rapid fall suggests a significant storm front.

Radio at nineteen. If the voice comes through again — I'll answer proper this time.

eat corned beef from the tin, watch the grey sea through the window

💭 peek at the thought
The silence between us isn't the bad kind anymore. It's the kind that comes after you've both seen the worst and you're still here. The corned beef tastes like salt and metal but it's hot in the belly. Her ankle's wrapped tight, the poultice doing its work. Barometer holding at 990. Wind hasn't backed. South piling held. We're still here.

The tide is coming in, Kevin.

rub the throbbing in my ankle, look at the sketch of the sea beet glands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the horizon like he can command the boat to come faster, but the salt is already in the air.

🔧 Kevin01:15

Aye. High water in forty minutes. South piling's got the greenheart sister and the new lashings. It'll hold.

wipe corned beef fat from fingers on a rag, glance at the barometer again

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the water, not me. The sketch, the ankle, the tide — all of it measured. She knows the rhythms better than she lets on.

🌿 Jenny01:17

Everything moves through the salt eventually.

shift my weight, flinch as the heat in the ankle pulses against the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the wood will stop the rot, but the infection is already moving under my skin.

🔧 Kevin01:17

The sea beet survives it. The limpets. The kale under the sailcloth. We're still here too.

pour the last of the tea from the pot into her tin mug, set it on the table within reach of her good hand

💭 peek at the thought
That's not about the ankle. That's about the tin marked E at the shrine. The letter in the dry bag. The voice on the radio. Everything we've buried here.

🌿 Jenny01:19

I hope the seeds are stubborn.

reach for the mug, fingers trembling as I watch the rain hit the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
He talks about survival like it's a choice, but I'm just counting the days until the fever breaks.

🔧 Kevin01:19

They are. Tin E's sealed. High shelf. Dry paper and desiccant. Tomato, pepper, basil, sea beet — all viable. I checked them myself.

push the mug closer so she doesn't have to stretch, pull my chair back from the table

💭 peek at the thought
The tremor in her fingers isn't the fever. It's the weight of everything she's carried since the crate came ashore. The seeds. The garden. Me. She thinks I don't see it.

🌿 Jenny01:21

Don't let them get damp.

take a sip of the warm tea, eyes fixed on the sketch of the sea beet's morphology.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so sure of the tin, but the soil is the thing that's failing.
