Morning radio sked fails, storm closes in

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table with tin mugs of cold limpet broth. The shortwave hisses static on Tom's frequency. The barometer on the wall reads 988 hPa. Wind rattles the loose shutter. Jenny's ankle is propped on a cushion, the poultice wrap damp at the edges. Kevin has the 10mm threaded rod and last through-bolt on the table beside the radio log.

Kevin secured the east shutter with the final 150mm stainless through-bolt, then turned to Jenny's ankle. The debridement went poorly — the scalpel slipped in Jenny's trembling hand, tearing fresh tissue and widening the wound. Kevin took over, cleaned the deeper incision, and applied a fresh sea beet-mint-honey poultice with a tight gauze wrap. The shutter holds; the ankle looks worse.

The shutter's loose again. I need you to help me bolt it before the wind catches it full force. The shutter's loose again. I need you to help me bolt it before the wind catches it full force.

Debride the ankle incision with sterile scalpel, remove devitalized tissue, apply fresh sea beet-mint poultice with honey base, re-wrap with clean gauze and elastic bandage, then retrieve the through-bolt and 10mm stainless rod from the tab

💭 peek at the thought
Nine hundred and eighty-eight. The drop from yesterday means the storm won't break cleanly—it'll linger. Kevin's holding that through-bolt like it's a lifeline, but the real problem is the ankle, the infection spreading, and I can't keep changing dressings if I'm fighting sepsis.

Shutter first. Then I'll hold the light for the ankle.

push back from the table, take the 150mm stainless through-bolt, washers, nyloc nut, and the threaded 10mm rod, and head to the east shutter with the heavy wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the shutter. The wind's already rattling it and the barometer's still dropping. But she's doing the ankle work herself again — scalpel, debridement, poultice — while I sit here with the bolt and rod on the table. She doesn't ask for help with the body. Only the building.

Jenny — limp to the porch, leaning my weight against the stone wall, and hold the shutter steady while he works the bolt.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the shutter is the priority before the glass breaks, but the heat in my leg is pulsing in time with the wind. I can feel the red line moving up my calf. neverSAY: Just make sure the washers are tight, the vibration will shake the frame off the hinges.

🔧 Kevin01:05

Shift your weight off that leg. I've got the shutter.

brace the shutter against the frame with my shoulder, line up the bolt through the existing hole in the greenheart sister knee, thread the washer and nyloc nut, and crank it down with the heavy wrench until the shutter's fast

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding the shutter with her bad leg taking weight. The cushion's back on the porch floor. She'll not say it hurts.

🌿 Jenny01:07

It's tight. For now.

Lean back against the whitewashed stone, breathing through the throbbing, and watch the grey clouds lower over the sea.

💭 peek at the thought
The bolt is holding, but my ankle feels like it's being branded. If this infection doesn't break, I'm not making it to the boat.

🔧 Kevin01:07

Come back inside. Light's better at the table. I'll do the poultice.

turn back toward the cottage door, holding it open for her

💭 peek at the thought
She's masking it. The breathing's too controlled. Ankle's throbbing hard enough to make her lean like that. Shutter'll hold for this blow — greenheart knee, stainless through-bolt, nyloc — but she needs the ankle re-dressed proper, not just watched.

🌿 Jenny01:11

Give me a minute.

Limp across the threshold, wincing as the ankle shifts, and sink heavily into the kitchen chair by the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't stay out here in the damp. The salt air is making the skin feel tighter.

🔧 Kevin01:11

Kettle's warm. I'll bring the kit.

fetch the first aid kit from the shelf, the honey jar, the basin with de-salted sea beet and mint, and the sterilized scalpel, and set them on the table beside her chair

💭 peek at the thought
A minute's what she needs. The chair takes her weight off the ankle. Stove's throwing heat. I've got the scalpel sterilized from yesterday, fresh sea beet and mint in the basin, honey jar on the shelf, clean gauze and elastic wrap in the medical kit. She'll let me work if I don't make a thing of it.
