A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin aggressively debrided Jenny's infected ankle wound, removing necrotic tissue and draining pus, then applied a fresh sea beet and pine resin poultice. The procedure was painful and the wound remains angry, but the drainage improved. They used the last of the sterile gauze and saline.

🌿 Jenny01:59

Kevin, the infection's getting worse. I need you to help me debride again - more aggressively this time. And I need pine resin mixed with the sea beet poultice.

Retrieve the sea beet poultice from the cottage, gather fresh mint and honey for the mixture, locate pine resin in the woodshed, prepare the debridement tools with saline solution, begin the more aggressive cleaning of the ankle wound while

💭 peek at the thought
The poultice isn't working - the swelling's getting worse and the infection's tracking past the margin. I need to try the pine resin mixture, but I'm running out of sea beet and the antibiotics are nearly gone. This ankle is going to take me under if I don't act fast.

Pine resin's in the woodshed, third shelf. I'll get it. You sit.

walk to the woodshed, retrieve the jar of pine resin from the third shelf, return to the porch, set it down beside the poultice bowl, pick up the scalpel and sterilize the blade in the flame of the storm lantern

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking me to cut deeper into her own flesh. The swelling hasn't gone down, the heat's still there, and now she wants pine resin — old sailors' trick, draws poison but burns like hell. My hands were steady at 0600. They're steady now. But the scalpel slipped last time because *she* was holding it. This time I hold it.

Be careful with the blade. The tissue is so angry.

Flinch as the cold steel touches the skin, grip the edge of the stone bench, watch the blood mix with the saline in the bowl.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being quiet again. That silence is more heavy than the storm. If I can't get this infection cleared out, I won't even be able to walk to the north ridge.

Breath slow. In through the nose, out through the mouth. I'm only taking what's already dead.

position the scalpel at the edge of the necrotic tissue, make the first careful incision along the swollen margin, let the pus and dead fluid drain into the bowl, wipe the blade clean on sterile gauze, continue debriding in small controlled

💭 peek at the thought
Angry tissue bleeds. That's good — means it's alive. Means it'll fight. The resin'll seal it after, but first I need to take what's dead. She's watching the blood. Let her watch. She needs to see it come clean.
