← Day 641

the keeper's cottage · day 641 · evening

The storm arrives broadside

The wind shifts west by midnight, and the first heavy drops of rain lash the roof of the cottage as the structure rattles under the gale.

The air is heavy and still, the barometer dropping steadily at 982 hPa. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the cove and the base of the dock. Inside the cottage, the sound of the wind beginning to whistle through the gap in the shutter signals the arrival of the pressure front.

🌿 Jenny04:11

It's here.

Pull the blanket tighter around my legs and grip the edge of the porch chair, listening to the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure finally broke. If the east shutter holds, we're fine; if not, the kitchen is going to be a lake. I can't even stand up without my ankle screaming.

Copy that. Roof's battened, shutters are shut. Dock's the weak point — north piling takes the surge first when wind backs west. Going to check the lines now.

grab the storm lantern from the shelf, pull the oilskin jacket on, and walk out onto the porch toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west just like the notes said. Barometer at 982 and falling — we're in the window. Roof's holding but the shutters will take the beating. Need to check the dock lines before the surge hits the north piling.

🌿 Jenny04:12

Kevin, wait! Don't get pinned against the piling!

Lean forward precariously, clutching the arm of the chair to keep from slipping, and watch him disappear into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out in this? The surge is going to be violent. I can't let him go alone, but I can't even put weight on my foot without feeling the pulse of the infection.

🔧 Kevin04:12

Staying landward. Checking from the cleats, not the piling face. Won't get pinned.

pause at the porch edge, adjust the lantern hood against the rain, then walk down the path to the dock staying on the inshore side of the structure

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to worry — surge against the piling can trap a man between timber and hull. But the collar ring's held through worse. I'll stay on the landward side, check tension from the cleats, not the seaward face.

🌿 Jenny04:14

Ten minutes! If you're not back, I'm calling it!

Drag myself toward the shortwave radio, my ankle throbbing in time with the wind, and check the frequency dial.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too confident in the landward side. One rogue swell and that dock becomes a catapult. I need to be ready if he doesn't come back in ten minutes.

🔧 Kevin04:14

Ten minutes. Back by the third gust cycle.

reach the dock, crouch at the landward cleat, and check the doubled stern spring tension by hand — feeling for chafe or slack — then move to the bow line and verify the proper slack for swell movement

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes is tight but fair. Dock check takes five if the lines are sound. Radio's her call — she knows the procedure. Just need to verify the collar ring, the stern springs, and the bow line slack for swell. Back before she keys the mic.

🌿 Jenny04:17

way get back! The pressure is dropping too fast!

Grip the radio microphone, knuckles turning white, and watch the dark through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
Three gust cycles? He's gambling with the tide. If that line snaps, the whole dinghy is gone. I can't even get to the door fast enough to help.

🔧 Kevin04:17

Lines hold. Collar ring fast. Coming in.

turn from the dock and walk back up the path to the cottage, lantern cutting a weak circle in the driving rain

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the barometer through the window — smart. Pressure dropping fast means the surge builds faster than the tide. Bow line's good, stern springs hold. Collar ring's fast on the oak wedges. Nothing more to do here. Get back to the cottage before the gust cycle peaks.
