The Rising Swell

The rain slows to a drizzle, but the tide continues to climb, threatening the lower garden walls and the dock moorings.

The tide has crested, pushing a heavy surge of saltwater over the dock planks and into the garden area. Kevin managed to swap the mooring line just as the tension reached a critical point, but the effort left him exhausted and the equipment soaked. They and Jenny retreated to the cottage, watching as the dry-stack garden wall failed under the weight of the rising water. Inside, the air is humid, and water seeps through the floorboards.

Kevin — walk to the dock and inspect the south piling brace and mooring lines at high tide.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's still pushing. Garden walls and dock moorings next if this keeps rising. Need to check the south piling brace before the water swallows it.

Kevin! Watch the tension on that line, it's screaming!

Stand up, grab the flashlight, and head toward the water edge from the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is too high for the dock; if that south way goes, the whole garden is lost to salt.

🔧 Kevin12:58

Stay there. I've got it.

Grab the coil of new half-inch three-strand from the porch rail and move to the stern cleat, easing the screaming line off the horn and replacing it with a fresh splice, working fast while the tide peaks.

💭 peek at the thought
She's on the porch, ankle bandaged, shouldn't be walking on it. Line's singing under load — dock's moving.

🌿 Jenny13:07

Don't let the slip take your hand! The dock is shifting!

Step off the porch onto the grass, shining the flashlight beam on the cleat so he can see the knot.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to lose a finger if that line catches him; the wood is too slick.

🔧 Kevin13:07

Jenny. Porch. Now.

Feed the new line through the chock, take two quick turns on the cleat while the old one still holds, then cut the old line free and snub the new one home — keeping my thumb clear of the horn — before stepping back and grabbing her arm to s

💭 peek at the thought
She's on the grass now, flashlight steady. Ankle can't take this ground. Dock's groaning — pilings shifting under the surge. New line's in hand, old one singing. Need her back on the porch before she goes down.

🌿 Jenny13:12

The water is too high, Kevin! Look at the salt pools!

Pull back toward the cottage steps, eyes fixed on the water rising over the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's holding it, but the south piling is groaning too loud. The tide is winning.

🔧 Kevin13:12

I see it. Go. Inside. Now.

Drop the line coil, stride up the grass, catch her elbow at the bottom step and steer her up onto the porch and through the door, closing it behind us against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt water over the garden wall. That's the lime beds, the heirloom rows. She's retreating — good — but the steps are slick. Dock can wait. She can't.

🌿 Jenny13:13

It's in the garden. The south wall is going to go.

Lean against the whitewashed stone, breathing hard, and watch the floor for leaks.

💭 peek at the thought
The door is shut, but I can still hear the dock groaning under the salt water.

🔧 Kevin13:13

Wall's dry stack. Won't hold standing water. But you're not going back out.

Cross to the radio shelf, grab the headlamp and the coil of new three-strand, then pause at the door — hand on the latch — listening to the tide slap the cottage foundation.

💭 peek at the thought
She's safe inside. Breathing hard. Ankle throbbing. South garden wall's dry stone — two courses I added last month, no mortar. Salt water's already through it. If the tide holds another hour, the heirloom beds wash out.

🌿 Jenny13:15

The seeds... Kevin, I haven't even planted them yet.

Walk to the kitchen table, pull the tin from my pocket, and set the metal down on the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wall goes, the grandmother's seeds are lost to the salt. Everything.
