The First Rain Breaks

Kevin and Jenny retreat inside as the first heavy drops hit the tin roof. The supply boat is still two days away, but the weather is turning violent.

Warm rain falls steadily over the cottage as the tide begins to rise against the dock. Kevin struggles to prepare the dock chocks in the slick, wet conditions, while Jenny stays inside monitoring the barometer as the pressure continues to drop.

Radio check at 0800. If they're not on the frequency by 0815, they're not coming Friday.

Walk to the porch and secure the shortwave radio under the tarp, then head to the dock to double the dinghy's stern spring with the new rope.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's falling faster than the forecast said. Wind's backing southwest — that's the bad quadrant for the crossing. If the supply boat tries the bar in this, they'll turn back or worse. Need to secure the dinghy's second spring and check the generator lashings before dark.

I'll check the tin again after the radio call.

Sit on the kitchen chair, open grandmother's seed tin, and inspect the packets for any sign of damp.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if this rain doesn't break, the seeds will rot before the boat even arrives.

(quietly, moving past her to the radio shelf) 0800. I'll wake you if the schedule changes.

Check the shortwave's aerial connection under the tarp, verify the battery charge light, then pull on boots and oilskins for the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thorough. Good. The tin's been through worse than this humidity but damp finds a way. If she says they're dry, they're dry.

way make sure the dock is secure before the wind picks up.

Winince slightly, wrap a cloth around my swollen own, and open the first aid kit to debride the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the radio is the only thing that matters, but the humidity is breathing through the stone walls.

Dock first. Radio at 0800. Then I'll look at that wrap.

Pull the oilskin jacket tight, grab the coil of new half-inch rope and the mallet from the porch, and head down the path toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing through it. Ankle's angry — red tracking up the calf past where the wrap ends. She won't say how bad it hurts. The antibiotics should've knocked the fever down by now. If they haven't by morning, I'm calling the coast guard medevac frequency whether she likes it or not.

🌿 Jenny22:09

Don't stay too long out in the slick.

Sit on the kitchen stool, peel the bandage, and apply antiseptic cream to the angry skin of my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide rises too high, the new chocks won't hold the dinghy anyway.

🔧 Kevin22:10

Won't.

Walk down the slick grass path to the dock, rope coiled over one shoulder, mallet in hand, oilskin hood up against the driving rain.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's already gusting thirty off the water. Rain's coming sideways. Dock work in this is stupid — but the south brace sang last night and the doubled line's the only thing holding her. If the mooring ring pulls free, the dinghy goes to matchwood on the rocks and we lose the only way off this rock.

🌿 Jenny22:11

Jenny — lean against the wood stove, watching the rain blur the window, and rubbing the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is getting heavier. If I don't get those chocks set now, the dinghy will be smashed against the piling by morning.

🔧 Kevin22:12

(nothing — too far for her to hear over the wind)

Step onto the dock, crouch at the mooring ring, and begin wrapping sail twine around the chafe point on the doubled stern line, fingers numb in the cold rain.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock planks are slick as grease. South piling's moving — not much, but enough to see the gap open and close under each swell. The doubled stern line's holding but the chafing point at the ring's already shiny. Need to serve it with sail twine before it saws through. Ironbark sleepers for the north chocks are still in the shed. Tomorrow, if the wind drops. If not, the deadman anchor holds.

🌿 Jenny22:13

Kevin! The tide is coming in!

Stand up with a sharp hiss of pain, grab the flashlight from the counter, and limp out onto the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is catching the spray now. If he doesn't secure that line, the whole thing will drift.
