Rising Tide at Afternoon

The tide has now submerged the lower dock rocks. You and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sky begins to darken further.

The rain transitions from a steady pour to a horizontal lashing, blurring the view of the island. Jenny heads out toward the north ridge, leaning heavily on the driftwood cane as the wind picks up from the west. Kevin stays at the cottage, watching the palm fronds flatten and worrying about the rising tide and the approaching swell.

🌿 Jenny00:11

The barometer is dropping fast. Did you get anything through on the radio today?

Lean back against the stone wall and wince as the weight shifts on my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is coming too early, and her ankle is throbbing with every step she takes.

Nothing since dawn. Aerial's still down. Heard the supply boat's beacon once, faint, around 0600. Couldn't raise them.

Walk to the radio shelf, pull the mic off its clip, key it — static hiss only. Set it back. Glance at the barometer: 975 hPa.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring the left leg. The swelling's tracked up past the brace line. Radio's been dead since the aerial insulator shattered — haven't had a clear window to fix it proper with the wind.

🌿 Jenny00:13

Ten days was the estimate. I hope they aren't fighting the swell.

Reach for the seed tin on the table and trace the' rim.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat didn't make it, I'm stuck with this infection for another week.

🔧 Kevin00:13

They're not coming tomorrow. Swell's building southwest. If they're fighting that, they'll wait it out at the mainland.

Pour two mugs from the kettle on the stove. Set one beside the seed tin. Lean the hip against the table, watching the steam curl.

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting days on that tin. Ten days, she says. The boat's never on time. Not once in eleven months.

🌿 Jenny00:15

way I need to check the north ridge soil before the storm really breaks.

Wrap both hands around the warm mug to dull the ache.

💭 peek at the thought
Another week of waiting. My ankle is going to be the death of me.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:15

Not today. Wind's gusting thirty on the ridge already. You go down wrong on that ankle and I'm carrying you back in the dark.

Set my mug down untouched. Cross arms. Wait.

💭 peek at the thought
North ridge in this wind. She'll slip on the shale before she gets a reading. Ankle won't hold on the descent.

🌿 Jenny00:17

I'm not a child, Kevin. I need to know if the soil is stable.

Take a slow sip of the coffee and look at the rain lashing the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's about the risk. It's about the seeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:17

Soil's not going anywhere. The ridge has held through worse. You go up there in this, you're not checking soil. You're making me choose between the radio and hauling you back.

Turn to the window. Watch the palm fronds flatten horizontal. Rain streaks the glass sideways.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. So am I. Difference is I know what the ridge does in a blow — seen it take a section clean off in '19. She's got data in her head she won't let go. Ankle or no ankle.

🌿 Jenny00:19

I can't just sit here and watch the weeds grow while the island takes over.

Set the mug down with a sharp thud and look at the rusted tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't plant now, the seeds will just rot in that tin anyway.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:19

The garden's not weeds. Wall's two courses higher. Tomatoes have shade cloth. Sea beet's taking in the salt beds. You did that.

Pick up the mug she set down. Drink. Bitter, strong. Set it back beside the tin. Don't reach for it.

💭 peek at the thought
The tin. She's thinking of the seeds. The garden. Everything we haven't done. The sensory garden I talked eleven months about and never built. She thinks I don't see it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:21

I need to check the ridge before the swell pushes more debris onto the beach. I'm going to the ridge. If the soil holds, I'll plant. If not... I'll find another way.

Grab my field notebook and head toward the door. </think> Pull on my rain boots and head for the door, limping slightly but determined.

💭 peek at the thought
He always notices what I've built, even when I forget. If I don't do this now, I'll never get another chance with these seeds.

🔧 Kevin00:21

Take the cane. And the headlamp. If you're not back by the time the tide turns, I'm coming up after you.

Step past her to the porch rack. Grab the driftwood cane, the LED headlamp. Shove them into her hands. Pull my oilskin from the hook. Shoulder into it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's going. Nothing I say stops her. The ankle, the wind, the ridge — she'll take the lot. If I let her go alone, she falls. If I go with her, the radio stays dead and the dock goes unchecked. Both matter.
