Evening in the Shelter

The tide begins to turn as the rain settles into a constant roar. Jenny returns to the cottage drenched and shivering, meeting Kevin by the warmth of the stove.

Kevin went to check the dock lines at high slack tide but the wind was stronger than expected. He found the north piling shim had shifted and the ring bolt was working loose, but couldn't complete repairs before the tide turned. Jenny debrided her ankle wound, changed the dressing with fresh gauze and sea beet poultice, and confirmed the heirloom seeds in tin E are viable and dry.

I'm back. The soil is stable enough.

Drop the wet notebook by the stove, lean heavily against the kitchen table, and sink into a chair to face the fire.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge is holding, but my ankle is screaming and I need to sit down before I collapse right on the floorboards.

Coffee's on. Mug on the shelf if your hands work.

pour two mugs from the pot on the stove, set one on the table near her good hand

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold through. Ankle's taking the weight wrong — favouring the left side. Notebook's soaked but the casing held. She made the ridge and back in this. That's something.

🌿 Jenny00:25

Thanks.

Reach out with trembling fingers to wrap both hands around the warm mug, letting the heat sink into my palms.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't know how much I'm shaking, but the warmth feels good right now.

🔧 Kevin00:25

Notebook's in the dry bag if the casing failed. Seeds? (quiet) You made the ridge. That counts.

set a folded dry towel on the chair back behind her shoulders, then return to the window watching the tide line

💭 peek at the thought
Hands shaking hard. Cold and exhaustion and the ankle all at once. She won't ask for help drying off or changing. I'll leave the towel on the chair back and not say a word about it.

🌿 Jenny00:27

They're in the tin. I'm not wasting them yet.

Take a slow sip of the hot coffee, wincing as the movement shifts my weight off my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
It's not ready yet. I can't risk grandmother's life on a patch that might shift.

🔧 Kevin00:27

Rest it. Elevate. I'll check the dock lines at high slack — tide's turning.

pull the stool from under the workbench, set it in front of her chair for her bad leg

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's sealed. Good. She's thinking ahead — not planting now, not until the ground settles and the ankle does. Smart. The wince she can't hide tells me more than words. Metronidazole's done. Doxycycline's done. Infection's either beaten or it hasn't, and we'll know in a day or two.

🌿 Jenny00:29

Don't stay out long in the wind.

Lift my ankle up onto the stool, letting out a long, shaky breath as the throbbing dulls slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the elevation. My leg feels like it's full of lead.

🔧 Kevin00:29

Ten minutes. Ring bolt, north piling, chafe points. Back before the kettle boils again.

pull oilskin from the hook, shrug into it, grab the headlamp from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking after me now. Telling me not to stay out. The ankle's elevated, colour's not angry red anymore — just swollen and bruised purple tracking up the calf. She's warm enough to argue. That's progress.
