Night at the keeper's cottage

Wind rattles the shutters as Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with mugs of limpet broth. The barometer reads 977 hPa and rising. Kevin's oilskin drips on the floor. Jenny's ankle is propped on a stool, freshly dressed. The radio sits silent on the shelf. Outside, the tide pushes against the dock pilings.

The tide is fully out, exposing the slick, barnacle-covered base of the north piling. Kevin stands on the dock, the come-along groaning as it takes the weight of the shifting timber, pulling the open mortise shut. Jenny watches from the cottage threshold, her hand white on the doorframe, tracking the tension in the cable, praying the steel doesn't snap out as the swell begins to turn.

Barometer's up two from noon. Wind's backing west-southwest. Means the swell's gonna hit the dock hard on the flood tide. North piling shim's crushed — greenheart sister's taking the load but the mortise is opening. Gotta get back out there before full dark.

pull on oilskin trousers, grab headlamp and come-along, head for the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still rising but the wind's backing west-southwest. That swell lag — dock lines'll take the real load in two hours when the tide turns proper. North piling shim's crushed, ring bolt mortise opening. Oak wedges holding but the wood's pulping round them. Need to get back out there before full dark and drive a proper shim, maybe sister the mortise with greenheart if there's any left. Jenny's ankle looks clean, dressing holding. She's quiet. Too quiet.

Take the heavy mallet too. If the ring bolt starts to pull, wedge the mortise and don't let it go.

Pick up the sketchbook and pencil, sketching a quick structural diagram of the dock's base to show him where the tension is concentrating.

💭 peek at the thought
If that shim goes, the whole dock comes with the tide and I can't help him lift the beam alone with this leg.

Mallet's on the porch. Greenheart wedge — got two tapered shims left in the shed. Come-along on the ring bolt to unload the mortise while I drive it home.

grab the heavy mallet from the porch, head for the dock with headlamp sweeping the planking

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Mallet's in the porch. The sketch — she's been watching the load paths closer than I thought. Mortise tension concentrating at the lower outer corner where the greenheart sister meets the old piling. That's where the shim crushed. If I drive a tapered greenheart wedge in there, backed by the come-along on the ring bolt to take the load off while I seat it... yeah. That'll work. If the wood holds.

🌿 Jenny00:35

Watch the tension on the cable! If it snaps, it'll take your hand out with it!

Stand up and wince, leaning heavily on the driftwood cane as I limp toward the porch to watch him work.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; the swell is already coming in and that wood is already groaning under the pressure.

🔧 Kevin00:36

Cable's good. Anchor point's the question. Piling holds or it doesn't. Back inside, Jen. Ankle's not ready for this.

step onto the dock planking, headlamp beam finding the north piling mortise, come-along hooked to the ring bolt, take up slack slow

💭 peek at the thought
Cable's rated for three tonne. Come-along's good for two. Only way it snaps is if the piling gives or the bolt pulls through — and I'm standing in the bite zone either way. She knows. That's why she's out here on a leg that's got no business bearing weight. Wind's steady thirty, gusting higher. Tide's pushing. Gotta work fast.

🌿 Jenny00:37

If that shim slips, I can't help you hold the beam! Use the way now before the swell shifts!

Grip the edge of the doorway until my knuckles white, watching the come-along strain under the weight.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being reckless. The tide is rising faster than he's accounting for and that wood is screaming.
