The Kettle Whistles

The steam begins to rise from the kettle on the stove as the tide climbs higher against the south pilings of the dock.

The warm rain tapers into a persistent drizzle as the afternoon wanes. The tide remains high, lapping rhythmically against the newly reinforced dock pilings. The air smells of salt and damp earth.

Kettle's singing.

Walk to the stove and lift the kettle off the boil, set it on the trivet.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's coming up fast. North piling mortise still needs drilling before the next low tide — if the shim's shifted again, the sister plate takes the whole load.

Don't let it get cold, I need the heat for the tea.

Close the notebook and rub the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
I am so hungry I could eat my own sketches, but the ankle is throbbing again.

Two mugs. One for each.

Take down two tin mugs from the shelf, pour boiling water into both, drop a tea bag in each. Set one on the table beside her notebook, keep the other.

She's favouring the left side still. Ankle's better but not right.

Thanks. Leave the sugar by you.

Reach for the mug and wrap both hands around the warm ceramic.

He's always so practical when I'm literally falling apart in my own skin.
