The Clouds Break
The first heavy drops of the wet season rain hit the dust, turning the lime into a paste as the wind picks up from the north slope.
Kevin and Jenny worked lime into the north slope soil before the rain arrived, Kevin on the upper and middle bands, Jenny along the garden wall where water pools. A coconut crab had disturbed the garden overnight. Both struggled with the heavy, wet clay — Kevin's fork kept balling up, and Jenny's ankle gave way under the kneeling pressure, forcing her to stop early.
Jenny — shed. Now. Grab the fork and the remaining sack.
work the lime into the north slope soil with the garden fork, driving it deep before the rain turns the surface to slurry

I'm coming, don't push.
Grab the fork and the sack of lime, moving toward the slope despite the throbbing in my ankle.

Take the lower third. I'll hit the top where the runoff starts. Fork it in deep — six inches minimum.
move to the upper slope and drive the fork into the wet ground, twisting lime into the clay before the rain seals it

Six inches? I'll try.
Drive the fork into the earth near the garden wall, mixing the white lime into the dark, acidic mud.

Trench holds. Outlet's clear. Keep the fork moving — don't let the clay ball up on the tines.
work the upper slope methodically, driving the fork full depth and levering back to open the soil for lime penetration, moving laterally across the fall line

I'm moving.
Lean my weight onto the fork to break up the lumpy soil, clearing the tines with my boot as I work.

Slow it. Let the weight do the work. I'll take the middle band — you hit the wall line where the water pools.
shift down-slope to the middle band, forking lime deep into the exposed clay seam where the crack opened last week, letting rain drive it in

I'm on it.
Kneel in the mud by the garden wall, driving the fork into the pooling water and churning the lime into the grey slurry.
