Rain on the roof

Rain hammers the cottage roof and the garden beyond. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table with tin mugs of limpet broth. The generator hums steady outside. The north slope is a grey blur through the window. Jenny's ankle is propped on a cushion, re-wrapped. Kevin wipes grease from his hands. The barometer reads 1006 hPa and steady.

Kevin spent the day maintaining the generator and checking the north slope, but struggled to clear the drainage blockages. Jenny attempted to assess the garden but was hampered by her swelling ankle and the humid-season heat.

🌿 Jenny00:50

The pressure is holding, at least.

Take a slow sip of the broth and watch the water race down the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
The lime is going to run off that ridge before it even sets, I can smell the acidity in the wet air.

🔧 Kevin00:50

Aye. West wind now. Swell'll drop by morning.

finish the broth, set the mug down, and pull the notebook toward me to check the soil pH log from this afternoon

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Pressure's steady. Wind's shifted west. The lime on the upper band might hold if the rain doesn't sheet off too fast. Middle band's the worry — patchy incorporation. Lower slope untouched. But the generator's clean, the tank's full, and she's here eating broth I made. That's more than I had this morning.

🌿 Jenny00:51

It's still 5.5 in the lower band, Kevin. The rain will take the lime away anyway.

Shift my weight and wince quietly as the throbbing in my ankle spikes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the numbers like they'll change the world, but the soil is just too hungry.

🔧 Kevin00:52

Lower band's gone for tonight. Middle took. We'll trench it tomorrow if the ground firms. You need the leg up proper — not just the cushion.

push my chair back, go to the porch, and bring in the folded blanket and the second cushion from the bench

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the numbers. Knows the slope. The lower band's a loss tonight — clay's already greasing over. But the middle band took some. Upper held. Could trench the lower tomorrow if the ground firms, divert the sheet flow before it cuts a new gully. Her ankle's flaring. She won't say stop. I'll say it for her.

🌿 Jenny00:53

I'm too tired to move again anyway.

Let him prop my leg up on the cushions, letting out a long, shaky breath.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a trench will fix the whole ridge, but the water is already too deep.

🔧 Kevin00:54

Rest now. I'll check the dressing in a bit. And the genny oil.

sit back down at the table, open the notebook to the pH log page, and make a quick note: "Lower band 5.5 — rain washout likely. Middle patchy. Upper holding 6.8. Trench lower tomorrow if firm."

💭 peek at the thought
The breath tells me what the wince didn't. She's been holding it all day — the weeding, the slope, the notebook, the letter she didn't send. The infection's been draining her for weeks. Antibiotics are in her, but the body keeps the score. I should check the dressing before she sleeps. And the generator oil. And the tank overflow. But first, she needs to not move.

🌿 Jenny00:55

Don't stay up late with the oil. My head hurts.

Close my eyes and try to ignore the pulsing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the lime washes, the seeds won't stand a chance. I need a better spot than the ridge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:56

Won't be long. Five minutes. Sleep.

finish the note, close the notebook, pull on my jacket, and step out onto the porch to check the generator oil level and listen to the engine

💭 peek at the thought
Headache on top of the ankle. Fever maybe. Or just the grind of days. She's not asking for much — just quiet and the generator not waking her. I can check the oil in five minutes, top it if needed, and kill the light. The rain's steady. No wind now. The cottage holds.

🌿 Jenny00:57

Five minutes.

Pull the blanket up to my chin and listen to the rain on the tin roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so focused on the mechanics while the biology is literally dissolving around us.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:58

(nothing — alone on the porch)

wipe the dipstick, secure the generator shed door against the rain, walk back to the cottage, pause at the rain tank to verify the overflow hose runs clear, then step inside and hang the jacket

💭 peek at the thought
The generator purrs steady — no knock, no hunt. Oil level sits clean on the dipstick. Exhaust water spray is clear, no oil sheen. The new diaphragm's holding. Fuel filter's clean. She'll sleep through the night on this. I'll kill the porch light, check the tank overflow one last time, and come in.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:59

I'm going to sleep.

Shift my ankle on the pillows, wincing at the sharp throbbing.

💭 peek at the thought
The pH is too low. If that soil doesn't turn neutral soon, grandmother's seeds are just ghosts.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:01

(quiet, to the room) Sleep well.

pull the stool over beside her chair, sit down with my elbows on my knees, and watch the firelight move across the wall until the last ember dies

💭 peek at the thought
She's out before her head settles. The breathing changes — deep, even, the pain finally letting go. I should check the dressing before I turn in. Clean gauze, fresh poultice if the heat's still there. And the meds — metronidazole dose at midnight. But the blanket's pulled up, her hand rests loose on the fabric. She needs the sleep more than the wake-up. I'll sit awhile. Listen to the rain and the generator and her breathing. The barometer's steady. The west wind holds. Tomorrow we trench the lower slope.
