← Day 689

the keeper's cottage · day 689 · evening

Evening meal and tide watch

Kevin and Jenny sit at the porch table as dusk settles. The tide is high, surf audible close to the cottage. A kettle steams on the stove. Jenny's ankle is re-wrapped, antibiotics taken. Kevin has a tin mug of limpet broth. The barometer reads 1011 and rising. The supply boat is due in five days.

The tide is high against the garden wall, water lapping at the lower stones as the evening rises. Inside the cottage, the leak from the shutter creates a steady, rhythmic drip onto the floor. Jenny sits on the wall, her ankle wrapped in a damp bandage, breathing heavily as the trade wind hums through the salt-heavy air.

Kettle's boiled. Want a mug?

pour limpet broth from the pot into a second tin mug and set it on the table

💭 peek at the thought
Five days until the boat. Barometer rising means we'll have a window. Need to check the south slope anchors tomorrow at first light before the tide turns — if the clay's washed again the whole fracture shifts. And the Yanmar still vibrates above half throttle. Prop shaft or the mast bracket. One of them's lying.

🌿 Jenny17:37

Yeah. Thanks.

Reach for the warm mug, fingers shaking slightly, and lean back against the stone wall to take weight off my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My leg is throbbing in time with the waves, but the smell of that broth is the only thing keeping me awake right now.

🔧 Kevin17:37

Ankle still throbbing?

sit on the porch step, mug cradled in both hands, watching the tide line creep up the garden wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's still shaking. Antibiotics should've steadied that by now. Third day on the course. Fever broke, red line faded. But the deep ache in the joint — that's not infection anymore. That's bone and tendon remembering.

🌿 Jenny17:39

Constantly. The bandage feels tight.

Take a slow sip of the broth, eyes tracking the way the water hits the half-weeded garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
It feels like a hot pulse under the skin, and I can't even focus on the ridge survey properly today.

🔧 Kevin17:39

Loosen it tonight. Elevate on the cushion. I'll re-wrap in the morning before we move.

take a slow sip of broth, salt and fat warming the hollows, eyes on the south beach where the surf breaks heavier now

💭 peek at the thought
Bandage tight means swelling still underneath. She won't say it but she's favouring it hard. Should've checked the wrap before she walked the north ridge today. My fault.

🌿 Jenny17:41

Jenny — set the mug down on the table and shift my leg up onto the bench, wincing as the pressure changes.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get to the north ridge soon, I'll never know if that soil is right for the tin. continuedSAY: I'll try. Just need the swelling to go down.

🔧 Kevin17:41

Ridge data worth it?

reach over and gently unwind the top turn of the bandage, fingers careful on the swollen skin

💭 peek at the thought
That wince. She's been hiding how bad it is all day. Walking the ridge on that ankle — stupid brave. I should've stopped her. Should've gone myself.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:45

It has to be. I need to know if the clay layer is deep enough.

Let out a long, shaky breath, watching his hands as the pressure loosens slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
It's the only place on this island that might actually hold them, but right now I'm stuck watching the tide.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:45

Clay's deep enough. You proved that last month. The fracture's not the clay — it's the water behind it.

finish loosening the bandage, fold the tail back clean, set the mug aside and pick up the roll of clean gauze

💭 peek at the thought
Clay depth. She's thinking garden, long term. Thinking years. I'm thinking five days until the boat and whether the south slope holds. Different clocks.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:47

Then I need to find where the runoff stops.

Watch him work the gauze, my mind already tracing the drainage patterns on the north slope.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's the water, then the whole ridge might be shifting, and I can't risk grandmother's seeds.
