Evening Debrief

Kevin and Jenny meet in the cottage as the sun begins to set. The onshore breeze is cooling, and the sound of the tide fills the room.

The air at the shrine is heavy with humidity as the sun dips below the overcast horizon. Jenny sits at the table, her hands trembling as she grips the warm ceramic, her eyes fixed on the sketch of the shifting ridge. Kevin watches her, the weight of the approaching supply boat and the unstable ground pressing on both.

🌿 Jenny19:21

The clay in the cave is dense, Kevin. But the ridge is shifting, I can feel it.

lean heavily on the kitchen table, wincing as I shift weight away from my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the waves, and I can't stop thinking about whether that clay will actually hold the seeds.

🔧 Kevin19:21

You shouldn't have gone up there alone.

walk to the kettle and lift it, checking the water level

💭 peek at the thought
She's been up there all day on a bad ankle. The cave ridge shifting means the seed tin won't stay dry much longer — maybe not even until the supply boat.

🌿 Jenny19:23

I had to know. If the ground isn't stable, I'm just wasting grandmother's tin.

wipe a bead of sweat from my forehead with the back of my hand, staring at the sketch in my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's about the climb, but it's about the soil—the seeds are waiting for a home.

🔧 Kevin19:23

The tin's sealed. It'll hold a while longer.

set the kettle on the stove and strike a match for the burner

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tin. But she's burning up again and that ankle's hot to touch — the antibiotics should've held the line by now.

🌿 Jenny19:33

It's not just the tin. It's the soil. I need a place that won't wash away.

trace the outline of the sea cave strata in my sketch, my fingers trembling slightly from the fever.

💭 peek at the thought
"Sealed" isn't enough when the humidity is this high; the mold will get through it eventually.

🔧 Kevin19:33

The garden beds are high. Drained. Lime's holding pH.

pull two tin mugs from the shelf and set them on the table

💭 peek at the thought
She's planning ahead like we have years. The cave's clay is sliding, the north slope's cracking, and she's sketching strata with a fever. The garden's the only ground we've held.

🌿 Jenny19:35

The garden isn't ready for the heirloom seeds, Kevin. The drainage is... the clay is too heavy.

wince as I shift my leg, watching the steam rise from the kettle.

💭 peek at the thought
The garden is still half weeds and I haven't even planted one thing because I'm busy waiting for the perfect spot.

🔧 Kevin19:35

It's better than the cave. We amend the beds. Not tonight.

pour hot water into both mugs, letting the coffee steep dark and strong

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the garden at its worst — salt burn, damping off, clay that sets like brick. But the beds are built, the wall's two courses higher, and the lime's worked in. It's better than the cave.

🌿 Jenny19:37

I know. But the ridge... the strata felt different. I had to see.

reach for the mug, the heat from the ceramic seeping into my palms.

💭 peek at the thought
If I plant them in bad soil, the first storm will take them whole. I can't lose grandmother's seeds.

🔧 Kevin19:37

Drink it.

push the second mug closer to her side of the table and sit opposite her, the chair legs scraping the floor

💭 peek at the thought
She almost lost her footing on that clay today. I saw the mud on her trousers when she came back — higher than the knee. The ridge is moving under her.
