Evening radio watch and wound check
Rain hammers the roof. Kevin sits at the radio table, headphones on, logging the 2000 schedule silence. Jenny rests on the porch bench, ankle elevated on a cushion, the cold pack warming beside her. The bucket under the shutter leak is half-full. A tin mug of broth steams between them.
The humidity is heavy as the sky thickens over the cottage. Kevin checks the water levels and prepares the gear for the coming rain while the supply boat draws near. Jenny manages the infection in her ankle and monitors the barometer as the air pressure begins to drop.
2000 schedule clear. Logged it. Barometer's 1007 and rising.
set headphones down on the radio table, reach for the tin mug of broth

Good reading on the barometer. Still holding at 1007?
reach for the cold pack and press it against my ankle through the bandage

Holding steady. Wind's dropped to force 3. Swell's still running but the chop's flattening.
blow across the broth, take a sip, set the mug down on the table beside the radio log

Good. I'll check the tank level after this - might need to divert that runoff properly.
shift position on the bench, letting my ankle throb briefly before pressing it back against the cold pack

Runoff's clean. Trench took it straight to the rock face. Tank's at 391 — near full.
lean back in the chair, stretch the stiffness from the trench work out of my shoulders

Good. But I need to check the overflow - if it's still leaking onto the foundation, we're wasting water. Good. But I need to check the overflow - if it's still leaking onto the foundation, we're wasting water.
hop slightly off the bench, wincing as I test my ankle's stability on the cane </think> hop slightly off the bench, wincing as I test my ankle's stability on the cane

Stay off it. I'll check the overflow. You check the tank gauge from the porch.
stand, grab the LED headlamp off the shelf, pull the hood up

It's at 391. Don't miss the bucket.
lean heavily on the cane and hobble to the edge of the porch to read the gauge.

Bucket's next. Back in a minute.
step out onto the porch, duck under the dripping shutter, swap the bucket for the empty water basin, set the full one down carefully

Tank's almost full. We have enough time until the boat.
sit on the kitchen chair, prop my ankle up on a stool, and watch the clouds thicken.

Dock's sound. New planks held at low tide. Ring bolt's fast. We'll load when she comes.
carry the full basin to the sink, pour it slow into the tank top-up funnel, watch the level rise

I'll check the spring drainage tomorrow, if the swelling subsides.
reach for my sketchbook and start a rough outline of the clouds.
