Midday meal and radio schedule

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch at midday with boiled limpets and broth. The Yanmar test log lies open on the table. The shortwave radio sits ready for the 2000 schedule. Jenny's ankle is elevated on a cushion, the fresh poultice visible under the gauze. A light breeze comes off the water.

Kevin shoveled the intercept trench at the spring, hitting the clay lens at forty centimeters and cutting a clean diversion toward the rock face. Jenny hobbled back to the cottage on her cane, debrided her ankle with the sterilized scalpel, and re-dressed it using the last sterile gauze. A squall slammed in mid-afternoon — wind first, then driving rain — and the barometer steadied at 1005 hPa rising.

The drainage is good there, Kevin. It won't wash away.

Sketch a detailed map of the spring-side soil stability in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The ankle is throbbing again, but the soil by the spring actually looks stable. I need to move those seeds before the next rain for real.

Clay lens at forty centimetres. Shear plane when it's wet. You marked the overflow route?

Eat limpets from the pot, broth warm in the tin mug, eyes on the radio schedule clock.

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping the spring-side soil again. Smart — the intercept trench above the cottage held through the last front, but the clay lens at 40cm is slick when saturated. If she's logging it, she's planning for the next one. Good.

I'll dig a diversion trench toward the rock face. It should hold the runoff.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts, and grab the shovel from the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the clay, I always overlook the way layers, but I can't lose grandmother's seeds to a landslide.

Take the trowel. Shovel's too heavy one-legged.

Set the mug down, stand, and walk to the porch rail where the garden tools lean — hand her the hand trowel, then pick up the shovel myself.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on a wound that hasn't closed. The red line hasn't crossed the tattoo but the swelling's hot to touch. She'll dig one-handed and favor the good leg, and the trench will be shallow. Let her start. I'll finish it.

🌿 Jenny18:21

I can handle the shovel. I need to see the drainage depth.

Limp toward the spring, leaning heavily on the driftwood cane, testing the soil with my boot.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being helpful, but the weight is manageable. I just need to get the survey done before the clouds get any darker.

The lens is at forty. You'll hit it on the third swing. Let me.

Step in front of her, shovel shouldered, and walk the spring line myself — boots finding the old intercept trench, eyes reading the ground she just sketched.

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn as the dock bolts. She'll test the soil with her boot and call it good, then dig a trench that holds until the first real rain. The cane slips on wet clay. I know the slope. I know the lens. She doesn't need to prove it.
