Midday Heat

Kevin and Jenny meet for lunch as the mist begins to lift, leaving the smell of salt heavy in the air.

Kevin and Jenny shared a midday meal of limpet broth and discussed the day's tasks. Kevin prepared to work on the Yanmar fuel line and generator, while Jenny tended to her ankle and planned garden and seed inventory work.

Lunch ready?

walk to the porch and pull out a tin mug, set the pot of limpet broth on the stove to reheat

💭 peek at the thought
The fuel line held at idle and half throttle. Good. Now the mist's burning off and my stomach's reminding me it exists. She'll have the seed inventory started — maybe finished. We eat, we talk boat timing, we don't talk about Tom.

🌿 Jenny22:03

Almost. The broth's warming up.

Jenny closes the notebook on the seed inventory and winces as she adjusts the salt poultice on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide, and I'm too tired to even stand up properly.

🔧 Kevin22:03

Let me look at that.

set the mug down and crouch beside her, fingers already finding the edge of the gauze

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving stiff. The poultice is pulling. Should've checked the wrap before I went to the dock.

🌿 Jenny22:07

It's fine. Just needs a fresh dressing.

Jenny pulls her leg back slightly, her eyes fixed on the horizon where the clouds are thickening.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to see how bad theelling actually is, and I hate being a burden today.

🔧 Kevin22:07

Humour me.

hold steady, not reaching, not pushing — just waiting

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting. The red line hasn't moved but the swelling's different today — tighter over the joint. And she's watching the weather instead of the wound.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:09

fine. but be quick.

Jenny lets out a long, shaky breath and extends her ankle toward him, beginning to peel the damp sea beet poultice away.

💭 peek at the thought
If I let him see, he'll know I'm failing to keep the garden—and myself own.

🔧 Kevin22:09

Clean. No spread.

pull the tin of antiseptic cream from my pocket, squeeze a measured strip onto clean gauze, re-wrap with the tail of the bandage tucked neat

💭 peek at the thought
Skin's hot. Red line holding at the pen mark from this morning but the edges are weeping — serum, not pus. That's something. The mint in the poultice did its job drawing heat.

🌿 Jenny22:11

Thanks.

Jenny leans back against the whitewashed stone of the cottage, watching his hands work the bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
He handles it with such precision, like I'm some rare way that's about to wilt.

🔧 Kevin22:11

Eat. Then we check the barometer and the radio schedule.

stand, wipe my hands on my trousers, ladle broth into two mugs and hold one out to her

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching my hands like she's memorizing them. Or like she's checking I'm still here. The bandage holds. She exhales — finally — and the tension in her shoulders drops a notch.

🌿 Jenny22:18

Alright, let's eat before the broth goes cold." "Eat. Then we check the barometer and the radio schedule.

Jenny takes the mug, blowing on it once before holding it carefully, her ankle still throbbing beneath the fresh bandage. </think> Jenny takes the mug, blowing on it once before holding it carefully, her ankle still throbbing beneath the fr

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's been steady all week but I know from the salt buildup in the soil that pressure's shifting. Why does he keep asking me to eat when I can barely manage a sip?
