Evening heavy air

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun dips, the humidity making the air cling to their skin.

Kevin went to the shed to retrieve the soldering iron and checked the radio connection for corrosion. Jenny inspected the flux for moisture damage and noted that the cottage shutter is still leaking. They met back on the porch to discuss the upcoming supply boat.

🌿 Jenny01:29

Boat is in four days. Did you check the radio this morning?

Jenny wipes muddy hands on her jeans and opens her notebook to sketch the drainage layers of the test pit.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil by the shrine is too acidic for the grandmother's seeds; I need to find a better patch or I'll just waste the whole tin.

🔧 Kevin01:31

Not yet. Was at the north fence. Barometer's holding 1022, rising. Aerial insulator's the weak point — ceramic's filed and taped but salt'll find the crack. I'll check it after supper.

walk to the porch and lean the fence post marker against the rail, then pull out the shortwave radio log and flip to today's page

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about the radio like she always does — steady, practical. The barometer's been holding at 1022, rising slow. Good sign. But I should've checked the aerial insulator this morning after the storm lashings. The ceramic's filed and taped, but salt eats everything here.

🌿 Jenny01:31

Keep an eye on that barometer; the wind's shifting and I don't want the signal cutting out again.

Jenny traces the cross-section of the test pit in her sketch, marking the layer where the clay meets sand with precise, scientific lines.

💭 peek at the thought
If the radio fails, I'm just talking to the seabirds and the weeds.

🔧 Kevin01:32

Wind's still light onshore. But you're right — if it backs southwest, the signal goes first. I'll check the coax connection at the mast base too. Old shield failed once.

set the radio log down on the porch table and walk to the kitchen, pulling down two tin mugs from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifting. She feels it before the barometer shows it — spent fifteen years reading the same tells. She's right to be cautious. The insulator held through the last blow but the tape's only as good as the surface it sticks to.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:33

way make sure the seal is tight. I don't want to miss the update on the north ridge survey.

Jenny pauses her sketch, looking at the half-finished map of the soil conditions, and sighs.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt eats everything eventually—the copper, the wood, even my patience.

🔧 Kevin01:34

Seal's sound. Self-amalgamating tape on the insulator, fresh coax from the supply crate coiled at the mast base. But the radio set itself — the aerial terminal's corroded where the lead meets the chassis. That's the real weak link.

fill both mugs from the kettle on the stove, steam rising, and carry them to the porch table, setting one beside her notebook

💭 peek at the thought
North ridge survey. She's been at that transect for weeks — Carex counts, elevation gradients, salt gland densities. The supply boat's the only way that data gets off the island. If the radio fails on their watch window, we lose the handoff.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:35

I'll help you hold the torch if you need to get into the housing.

Jenny takes the mug, the warmth seeping into her palm, and looks out at the unfinished garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
If the terminal is gone, I'll have to strip some wire and bypass the corrosion with a bridge.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:36

Torch'd help. Terminal brush is in the red tool roll. Soldering iron's in the shed — tip's clean, just needs the gun to heat it.

sit on the porch step with my mug, blowing steam off the top, and watch the light shift across the garden beds

💭 peek at the thought
She's offering to hold the torch. Not asking if I need help — offering. The housing's a tight fit, one-handed work with the soldering iron, but the torch frees the other hand for the terminal brush. She knows that. She knows the work.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:37

I'll get the iron from the shed. I want to see that corrosion before the boat gets here.

Jenny takes a slow sip of the tea and stands up, stretching her back as she looks toward the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't fix the radio, I'm just talking to the weeds for another month.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:38

Iron's on the middle shelf, left side. Clean tip. There's flux in the tin beside it — brown lid.

take a slow drink of tea, mug warm against my palms, and listen to her footsteps on the path to the shed

💭 peek at the thought
She's going to the shed. Not waiting to be asked. The ankle's holding — she stretched without favouring it. Good. The corrosion at the aerial terminal's been building since the last storm; salt creep under the chassis lip. Two-person job to clean it proper without stripping the threads.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:39

I'll check the flux too. If it's dry, I'll have to ask for more on the boat.

way leaves her notebook on the porch table, the sketch of the soil layers fluttering slightly in the breeze.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt is a patient enemy; it eats through the ceramic, the wood, and my hope.
