The Rain Breaks

The first heavy drops hit the tin roof as Kevin and Jenny watch the leak in the cottage shutter.

The rain continues its steady rhythmic drumming against the roof as Kevin climbs the extension ladder to patch the cottage shutter. Jenny holds the base steady, shifting her weight on the slick grass while she watches him work the tar and lead flashing, both hampered by the persistent heat and the slickness of the downpour.

Tar's on the workbench. Flashing too. We patch it when the rain lets up, or we patch it now in the wet. Your call.

Walk to the workbench and pick up the roofing tar and lead flashing, turning them over in my hands.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the drip. I'm watching the generator gauge. Both of us know what the other is thinking — this roof held forty years of keepers, but the last storm found the rot we missed.

Do it now. I can't spend another night listening for the bucket to overflow.

Sit up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts, and reach for the roll of tape.

💭 peek at the thought
If we wait, the water will seep into the wood and rot the sketches, but my ankle is throbbing too much to stand.

🔧 Kevin14:35

Right. Hand me the tape. I'll hit the shutter seam from outside, you run the flashing inside the porch where it's dry.

Pull the porch door open and step out into the rain, tar and flashing in hand, moving straight for the east shutter where the leak tracks down the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The bucket's half-full already and the barometer's still falling. Better to work wet than listen to that drip all night with her ankle throbbing.

🌿 Jenny14:42

Be careful with the tar, don't let it get on the stone.

Tear a long strip of tape and press it firmly against the stone wall, waiting for him to artwork the outside seam.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked, but at least the interior wall will stay dry for the notebook.

🔧 Kevin14:43

Hold it steady. I'm coming up.

Set the tar tin on the porch rail, prop the extension ladder against the cottage wall under the east shutter, and climb up with the putty knife and lead flashing tucked under my arm.

💭 peek at the thought
She's taping the inside face so the tar has a clean line to meet. Smart. My boots are slick on the porch boards — one wrong step and I'm off the ladder with a kettle of hot tar.

🌿 Jenny14:51

I've got it. Just watch your weight.

Press the edge of the tape heavily against the stone, keeping it level while I watch him reach the top.

💭 peek at the thought
If that ladder slips on the wet stone, we're both going down.

🔧 Kevin14:51

Tape's clean. Hold that end.

Scoop a dollop of tar onto the putty knife, press it into the shutter seam where the flashing meets stone, and work it upward in a steady bead, smoothing the lead over the top edge as I go.

💭 peek at the thought
Tape's holding. She's got a good line on it. Rain's coming harder now — cold, sideways. The tar's stiff in the tin. Gotta work it fast before it skins over.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:53

Make sure you get the corners tight, or it will just channel right through.

Lean my weight against the ladder to steady it, keeping the tape flat against the wood frame.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working too fast; the rain is picking up and the tar will run.

🔧 Kevin14:53

Corners first. Then the run between.

Work the knife tip into both upper corners of the shutter frame, forcing tar deep into the joints, then lay a continuous bead along the horizontal seam and press the lead flashing flat over it with the heel of my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — corners are where water finds the path. My fingers are numb enough that the knife feels vague. Tar's warming now, running proper.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:55

Press down hard on the edges, it's already already.

Watch the seam where he works, my ankle pulsing in time with the rain hitting the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually doing it, but the rain is making the tar a mess.
