Midday wound care and garden triage

Kevin and Jenny meet back at the cottage. Kevin has the dock assessment; Jenny has failed pH strips and evidence of crab damage. The generator runs. A pot of limpet broth sits on the stove. Jenny's ankle needs re-dressing. The supply boat is due in 6 days.

The air is heavy with humidity as the cloud cover thickens over the keeper's cottage. The tide is rising, pushing water closer to the dock pilings. Jenny limps toward the door, her ankle throbbing under the fresh gauze, while Kevin prepares to fetch the new water test kit from the generator shed.

🌿 Jenny17:17

The crab got through the anchors. It's shredded the shade cloth, too.

sits on the kitchen stool, wincing as the ankle shifts, and begins to unwrap the poultice to debride the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too acidic for the strips, or I'm just losing my mind. The island is eating the garden.

🔧 Kevin17:17

Crab's learning. We'll need heavier anchors and wire mesh at the base. Dock's worse — third plank from seaward is gone, stringer's spongy past the second piling. Got greenheart stacked for the sistering but need the last 150mm through-bolt. Tide's turning; two hours before it covers the rot line.

pour two mugs of limpet broth from the pot on the stove, set one on the table beside Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
The crab's gotten bold — or desperate. Shredded anchors mean it's learned the garden. Jenny's hands are steady on that wound but her jaw's tight. Dock rot's waiting on the tide. Six days to the boat.

🌿 Jenny17:20

I'll check the hardware in the own. The north ridge is a mess; the strips didn't work.

reaches for the saline bottle, fingers trembling slightly as she looks at the red boundary marked on her skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pH doesn't shift, way's seeds will just rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin17:20

Kit's compromised. New one came on the supply boat — unopened crate by the generator shed. I'll fetch it after the dock. Saline's on the shelf above the radio. Gauze in the med kit, last strip used this morning. We'll need to boil more rags if this goes past the boat.

walk to the generator shed and retrieve the new water test kit from the unopened supply crate, then return to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Strips failed again — humidity's killed the kit. She's marking the infection line religiously. Good. Means she's watching. Tremor in the fingers though. Pain or something else.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:24

I'll wait for the new kit. The ridge is too stubborn for today anyway.

picks up the tweezers and begins to carefully clean the edge of the infection, biting her lip against the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get the soil to turn, grandmother's seeds are just a waste of history.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:24

Tweezers are ruined. Tip's gone. Use the scalpel — sterilized, on the shelf by the radio. Clean edge heals cleaner. I'll hold the light.

take the LED headlamp from the shelf, click it on, and kneel beside the stool to angle the beam over Jenny's ankle

💭 peek at the thought
She's not waiting for the kit. She's waiting for the pain to settle. Tweezers are blunt — tip snapped off weeks ago. She'll tear tissue. Infection line hasn't moved past the mark. That's something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:26

Thanks. Just... hold it steady. I need to see the boundary.

takes the scalpel, her hand steadying despite the throb, and begins to debride the area.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but he doesn't see the pH levels.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:27

Boundary hasn't moved. Sea beet's earning its keep. Last gauze strip on the ankle — after this we're boiling rags. New test kit's on the table. Four strips inside.

keep the headlamp beam steady on the wound, watching the debridement, ready to hand her the saline bottle when she needs it

💭 peek at the thought
Good hands. Steady despite the pain. She knows this wound better than I do — lives in it. Boundary's clean, no new tracking. The sea beet's holding. Six days to the boat. Four metronidazole doses left. She's down to the last gauze strip.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:32

I'll try the ridge again. If these work, I need to plant before the crab gets creative. I'll check the ridge soil with the new kit. If it's still too acidic, I can lime it.

wraps the ankle carefully with the last strip of clean gauze, then stands and limps toward the door. </think> takes the new water test kit from the table and heads for the door, then pauses. </think>THOUGHT: I should mark where I plant thes

💭 peek at the thought
Four strips. Maybe the humidity didn't kill them all. The dock needs attention, but the soil's murdering my seeds.

🔧 Kevin17:34

Take the radio. Channel 16 if the crab decides the shed's next. I'm at the dock till the water rises.

set the headlamp on the table, pour the remaining broth into the tin mug, and drink it standing at the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on it now — ridge, lime, crab. Ankle wrapped, gauze gone, kit in hand. She doesn't wait. I'll finish the broth, grab the last 150mm bolt and the greenheart, hit the dock before the tide covers the rot line. Two hours. Maybe less.
