Evening meal and supply boat letter

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table in the dimming light. The storm lantern burns low. A pot of limpets steams on the stove. Kevin has a folded letter for Tom ready to seal in the dry bag. Jenny's ankle is elevated on a cushion, the poultice fresh. The barometer on the wall reads 981 hPa, steady. Outside, the sea is flat and the air is heavy with coming rain.

Kevin spent the evening reinforcing the garden defenses after the coconut crab breach and preparing correspondence for Tom. Jenny rested in the cottage, struggling with fever and persistent pain in her ankle. The warm rain continues to fall in intervals as the tide recedes further.

🌿 Jenny19:22

The north ridge is stable. I can move them tomorrow.

Sketch the soil profile of the south slope patch in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pH is 6.9. I finally found a place, but my hands won't stop shaking enough to hold the tin.

🔧 Kevin19:28

Eat first. The ridge isn't going anywhere tonight.

ladle limpets into two tin mugs, set one beside Jenny's notebook, take the other to the porch to eat standing

💭 peek at the thought
She's already planning tomorrow's work. Ankle infected, fever just broken, and she's mapping soil profiles for a slope that's been sliding since winter. The limpets smell good. The letter to Tom sits in my pocket, folded and refolded until the corners are soft. I should seal it in the dry bag now, before I find another reason not to.

🌿 Jenny19:28

I can barely walk to the ridge, let alone plant it.

Sip the warm broth and watch the rain hit the stone wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always right about the timing, but the silence is what hurts.

🔧 Kevin19:30

Then we don't plant the ridge tomorrow.

sit at the table with my mug, peel a limpet shell slow, watch the barometer needle not move

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. She's saying it out loud so I'll hear it and not ask her to go. The broth steams in the mug, limpets tender in the fat. My ankle throbs in sympathy with hers — different wound, same sea.

🌿 Jenny19:30

I just need the fever to break first.

Trace the edge of the sea beet sketch in the notebook with a shaky finger.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't plant now, the seeds might just rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin19:32

It'll break. You took the dose. Rest does the rest.

reach across the table, fold the notebook shut gentle over her finger, push the mug closer

💭 peek at the thought
The fever's been three days now. Antibiotics started yesterday. She's tracing the salt gland illustration I drew — the one from the north ridge transect, glands dense at the base, sparse up high. Smart. Distraction. The letter to Tom burns in my pocket. Barometer steady at 981. Rain hammers the roof.

🌿 Jenny19:33

I'm so tired, Kevin.

Lean back in the chair, closing eyes against the rain drumming on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks rest is a passive thing, but the infection is still working.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:34

Sleep now. I'll watch the barometer.

stand, pull the blanket from the hook, drape it over her shoulders, lift her mug to the stove before it cools

💭 peek at the thought
Three days of fever. The infection ate at her ankle while she sketched sea beet glands on a crumbling slope. She walked the cliff path in the storm. Changed her own dressing at 0600 without waking me. Now the antibiotics are working and the crash comes. The letter to Tom weighs heavy in my pocket — written, folded, unsent. Eleven months here and the garden's still half weeds.

🌿 Jenny19:34

Don't let the fire go out.

Let the head drop against the chest, listening to the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
The boat is five days away. I need to be standing by then.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:36

Kevin — add a split log to the stove, close the damper halfway, pull the stool to the porch doorway and sit with the radio log open on my knee

💭 peek at the thought
Fire's banked for the night, wood stacked dry beside the stove. She's asleep before the blanket settles. The limpets sit cooling in their mug. Barometer holds at 981 — steady, not rising. Storm's still coming. The letter to Tom stays in my pocket. I'll seal it in the dry bag tomorrow. Or the next day. The shore doesn't care.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:44

Jenny — drift off to the heat of the woodstove and the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is the only thing moving right now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:45

Kevin — pick up the pen, write the date and "barometer 981 steady, Jenny sleeping, storm front west" in the radio log, then tear the page out and fold it into the dry bag beside the letter

💭 peek at the thought
Her breathing evens out, deep and slow. The ankle pulse must be easing. Rain hammers the roof in sheets now, wind finding the chimney. Radio log sits blank on my knee — last entry was the supply boat ETA, three days at high tide. The letter to Tom presses against my thigh through the pocket fabric. Three days. Maybe the boat comes. Maybe it doesn't. The garden shade cloth holds on the new stakes. Dock moorings held at high tide. Engine spins true. Things I fixed. Things that hold.
