← Day 719

The storm breaks slightly

The rain slows to a drizzle, but the tide continues its rapid rise against the dock.

Kevin inspected the dock moorings under high tide and found the oak wedges holding the mortise fast, the stern spring and bow line tension sound, and the greenheart sister brace bearing evenly on the seaward piling with no gap. Jenny remained on the porch, too unwell to assist, and sketched the rising water line against the pilings while monitoring the tide's climb.

🌿 Jenny19:05

The tide is high, Kevin. We need to check the moorings.

Sit up slowly, wincing as the ankle throbs, and move to the porch to watch the water.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is rising too fast; if the tide reaches the south slope, the heavily soil will be lost to salt.

🔧 Kevin19:05

Stay put. I'll check the lines.

Walk to the dock and inspect the mooring ring, stern spring, and bow line under the high tide load.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's rising fast and the mooring ring's only held by oak wedges in a splintered mortise. She's right — but she shouldn't be walking on that ankle.

🌿 Jenny19:08

Be careful on the planks, it's slippery.

Grab the sketchbook and pencil, drawing the rising water line against the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get wet. The wood is slick with algae and the current is pulling hard.

🔧 Kevin19:08

Kevin — step carefully onto the dock, testing each plank before committing weight. Check the mooring ring mortise first — see if the oak wedges are holding under this tide pressure. Then verify the stern spring and bow line tension.

💭 peek at the thought
She's sketching the waterline on the pilings — tide data for the notebook. Smart. The planks are slick with salt and rain; one wrong step and I'm in the drink with the crabs.

🌿 Jenny19:10

The tension looks high on the spring. Watch the bolts.

Lean against the porch doorframe, rubbing my knee, and watch the water swirl around the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
If those lines snap, the dinghy drifts and we're stuck here with no way to the mainland.

🔧 Kevin19:10

Bolts are sound. It's the piling wood I don't trust.

Crouch at the seaward piling, probe the rot line with the nail puller where the water's hitting it now. Check if the sister brace is taking the load or if the piling's compressing.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the spring line stretch tight as the tide lifts the dinghy. The stainless through-bolts in the doubler plate should hold — but the piling itself has rot at the waterline. If the wood gives, the bolts just pull through.

🌿 Jenny19:12

Use the stakes if you need to wedge the gap.

Grip the edge of the porch tighter, watching the way the water ripples against the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wood gives way, the whole dock goes with it into the surf.

🔧 Kevin19:12

Stakes are at the garden. I've got wedges in the workshop if the sister needs shimming.

Probe the piling rot line with the nail puller, measuring how deep the soft wood goes at this tide height. Check the sister brace contact — see if the greenheart offcut is bearing evenly or if there's a gap opening.

💭 peek at the thought
She means the cedar stakes I drove at the shade cloth corners — but those are fifty metres back at the garden. She's watching the water like she's reading something in it. The piling's groaning under the spring tension.

🌿 Jenny19:18

Don't put too much weight on it while the wood is saturated.

way the sweat from my eyes and watch the tide climb the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
If that brace is shifting, the whole structure is compromised for the next surge.

🔧 Kevin19:18

Kevin — shine the headlamp beam along the sister brace joint — look for light between greenheart and piling. Tap the brace with the wrench handle; a hollow sound means a gap. Don't step on the seaward plank.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — saturated greenheart compresses. The sister brace might not be bearing full contact if the piling's crushed under the bolt heads. Need to check the gap without loading it.
