A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin heads south across the garden as the wind picks up, carrying the rope and mallet to secure the shade cloth. Jenny stays in the cottage, nursing her coffee and monitoring the shortwave radio while the clouds darken over the north ridge. The cottage shutter continues to leak despite the previous patch.

🌿 Jenny18:40

(To myself) The wind is turning. It's going to be a mess.

Sit on the kitchen chair, prop my ankle up on a stool, and reach for the radio on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping fast and my ankle is throbbing with every step; I need to check the radio before the rain starts for real.

Aerial insulator's holding. Ceramic and tape. If the coax doesn't chafe at the mast step, we're good.

walk to the wood stove, lift the kettle, check water level, set it back down

💭 peek at the thought
She's testing the radio before the storm hits properly. Smart. The barometer's still dropping.

🌿 Jenny18:42

Check the way on the south slope again. The wind will rip the stakes out.

Turn the dial on the shortwave, listening through the static for any signal from the mainland.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the hardware, but the barometer is screaming. If that storm hits, the shade cloth is gone.

🔧 Kevin18:42

I'll walk it after the kettle boils. Tie the shade cloth down proper this time — use the greenheart offcuts as deadmen.

pour hot water into two tin mugs, drop a spoon of coffee in each, stir with the same spoon

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. South slope takes the full fetch. Those stakes are only in soft ground.

🌿 Jenny18:44

Make sure the knots are tight. The wind will peel the whole thing off.

Take the mug of coffee and lean against the counter, watching the clouds darken over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks wood will hold a gale like this. The soil is too acidic anyway; I need that pH to be right before I even consider planting.

🔧 Kevin18:44

Bowlines on the stakes, trucker's hitch on the cloth corners. Greenheart won't pull through.

hand her the mug, pull on oilskin jacket, grab the mallet and coil of half-inch rope from the porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's watched me lose enough tarp and cloth to wind. Knows the knots better than she lets on.

🌿 Jenny18:46

If the stakes go, the seeds from grandmother's tin are lost to the mud.

Take a slow sip of the coffee and watch him head out into the rising wind.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so sure of the hardware. The island doesn't care about knots. way tackle is pulsing in time with the wind.

🔧 Kevin18:46

They won't go.

step off the porch into the wind, walk south across the garden toward the slope, rope coiled over shoulder, mallet in hand

💭 peek at the thought
That tin's the only thing she brought that matters. The rest is just gear.
