The Storm Breaches

The rain arrives in a sudden lpour. The wind screams through the gaps, and the tide begins to rise against the dock.

The rain intensifies from the west, forcing Kevin and Jenny indoors at the cottage. Kevin attempts to address the garden damage left by the coconut crab, while Jenny battles her pain and fever in the damp heat.

🌿 Jenny18:48

Kevin! way inside! The tide is coming too fast!

Stand up with a wince from my ankle, grab the metal bucket, and place it under the enough leak.

💭 peek at the thought
The garden is going to flood if he doesn't secure those anchors, and the north ridge is turning to soup right now.

🔧 Kevin18:49

Move. Now. I'm right behind you.

Grab Jenny's arm steady above the elbow, guide her up the porch steps and through the cottage door, shoulder-check the frame for water intrusion as we pass.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here early. Tide's pushing hard against the dock — if the mooring ring holds, the dinghy might ride it out. If not, we lose the boat. Jenny's ankle won't let her move fast. Need to get her inside first, then secure the dinghy and check the cottage leaks.

🌿 Jenny18:52

I know, I know. The north ridge is ruined at this rate.

way heavily against the kitchen table, catching my breath while watching the rain lashes the window.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always so clinical about it. My knees are throbbing and I can already smell the salt in the air.

🔧 Kevin18:52

Sit. Keep the leg up. I'll check the dock and the dinghy lines.

Cross the kitchen, pull the oilskin from the hook by the door, yank it on, grab the headlamp from the shelf, and step back out onto the porch into the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
She's exhausted and the ankle's bad. North ridge can wait — the cottage and dinghy can't. Rain's horizontal now, tide rising fast. Need to check the dock mooring, the generator shed, and the roof leak over the bedroom before the water finds the radio.

🌿 Jenny18:56

Be careful on the planks! The wood is slick!

pull out a chair, prop up my infected ankle on a stack of old journals, and watch the rain obscure the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out there in this, he's going to lose the dinghy. The tide is too high.

🔧 Kevin18:56

Always am.

Descend the porch steps carefully, test each dock plank with weight before committing, move toward the dinghy at the end of the dock against the wind and rain.

💭 peek at the thought
Planks are slick, tide's pushing hard, wind's rising. Dinghy's the lifeline — if the mooring ring or the storm anchor warp parts, we're stranded. Generator shed's next, then the roof. Jenny's safe inside for now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:58

The tide is hitting the moorings! Don't go out too far!

reach for the sketchbook on the table, start drawing the way the wind is bending the shade cloth in the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
way's going to get swept out. That swell is already pulling at the pilings.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:58

Checking the lines. Won't go past the dinghy.

Step onto the dinghy's gunwale from the dock, crouch low, inspect the bow line chafing at the fairlead, the stern spring at the mooring ring, and the storm anchor warp leading to the bottom.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's hammering the dock. Mooring ring held last time with the oak wedges and doubler plate, but the warp's taking the full strain now. Dinghy's riding high — bow line, stern spring, and the storm anchor off the bow. Need to check each connection, then the generator shed lashings.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:00

Kevin, the line is fraying! Come back to the dock!

drop the pencil, stand up despite the pain, and watch the dinghy lurch in the swell.

💭 peek at the thought
That line is going to snap. The surge is too much weight on the old rope.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:01

Not leaving the boat. Doubling the bow line now.

Work fast — pull in slack on the bow line, pass a bight around the dock cleat as a second turn, snug it with a rolling hitch to share the load, then check the stern spring where it meets the mooring ring.

💭 peek at the thought
She sees fraying from the porch — likely the bow line at the fairlead or the stern spring at the ring. Dinghy's surging, each wave loading the lines. If one parts, the others take the shock. Need to ease the strain, not abandon the boat. Double the bow line, check the stern spring's chafe guard, verify the storm anchor's holding.
