Approaching Storm
Kevin is on the cottage roof while Jenny is by the garden beds.
Kevin spent the afternoon inspecting the cottage roof to find the source of the leak at the ridge beam. Jenny worked in the garden, managing the seedlings while dealing with her throbbing ankle in the heavy heat.
You use the crowbar to pry debris from the joint. The wind begins to pick up from the north.
Kevin — pry the last of the rotted mortar from the ridge beam joint with the crowbar, clear the debris onto the tarp below, then brush the joint clean with the wire brush.

Kevin — trowel the fresh mortar into the ridge beam joint, packing it deep and feathering the edges. Smooth it with the float, then lay the lead flashing strip over the top and bed it in. Batten it down with the timber strips and galvanized nails.

Kevin — climb down the ladder, coil it against the porch wall. Walk to the tank and check the overflow — make sure the epoxy plug from last week hasn't blown. Then head inside, pour coffee, sit.

You look for areas where water might be pooling around the heirloom seedlings. The barometer is dropping steadily.
Jenny — kneel despite the aching ankle and dig a shallow trench around the perimeter of the garden bed to channel the runoff away from the seedlings.

Jenny — wipe sweat from my brow with the back of a muddy hand and pull the water test kit from my pocket.
