Evening Prep

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage as the sun begins to dip, the tide now high against the pilings.

Kevin and Jenny shared a broth of corned beef and limpets by lantern light while rain hammered the cottage roof. Kevin confirmed the heirloom seed tin was dry and Tin E empty, then ran the pump to drain the kitchen floor through the copper spillway. Jenny drank the broth and rested her infected ankle, the swelling still visible beneath the poultice wrap.

Roof patch held. Generator's clean. You eat?

Walk into the kitchen, set the kettle on the wood stove, pull two tin mugs from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's still coming down hard, drumming on the tarp over the ridge. She's moving slow. Ankle's not right. I should've checked the generator fuel filter earlier — ran smooth this morning but the silt in the drums has been worse since the last boat.

The limpets are still cold. If you have something else...

sink into the kitchen chair, wincing as the weight hits my ankle, and watch the kettle start to steam.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so tired I can barely stand, and my ankle feels like a hot iron.

Corned beef tin from the crate. Fat's good for the broth. Limpets'll take two minutes.

Pull a tin of corned beef from the shelf, pry it open with the church key, scrape the fat into the kettle as the water heats, then tip the meat in after. Drop the limpets in behind it. Set a mug in front of her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it bad. The swelling's up past the brace line. Antibiotics should've taken hold by now. Water test kit's questionable but the tank's full — boiling's the only sure thing.

🌿 Jenny22:50

Thanks. Did you check the seed tin again? The moisture is getting in.

rubbing my tender ankle with a shaky hand and watch the broth bubble in the pot.

💭 peek at the thought
way's always trying to fix everything with food, but I just want to sleep.

🔧 Kevin22:52

Heirloom tin's dry. Tin E's empty — sides rotted out, lid sealed. Moved it to the counter, wrapped. Checked this morning.

Stir the broth, let it simmer, pour two mugs. Set one in front of her, keep one. Sit opposite.

💭 peek at the thought
She's asked three times this week. Tin E's sides are corroded through — lid's sealed but the body's gone. I moved it to the counter dry, wrapped it in tarp. The heirloom tin's confirmed dry. She knows this. She's checking if I'm still checking.

🌿 Jenny22:52

Good. I need to drain the kitchen tomorrow before the boat gets here.

take a slow sip of the broth, the steam fogging my glasses, and listen to the rain hitting the stone walls.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the seeds are dry for now, but the floor feels like it's breathing water.

🔧 Kevin22:54

Pump's primed. Hose reaches the grass slope. Copper spillway's clear. Want me to run it tonight or wait for slack?

Blow across the mug, take a sip. The corned beef fat coats the tongue, salty and rich. Watch her face in the lantern light.

💭 peek at the thought
Kitchen drain's the northeast foundation — water's been tracking under the sill since the last spring tide. She wants it done before the boat because the boat means diesel, means we run the generator hard, means the pump runs. Smart. The barometer's steady at 978 but the rain's not letting up.

🌿 Jenny22:54

Run it tonight. I don't want to worry about the floor tomorrow.

lean back against the chair, wincing as the movement shifts my ankle, and watch the kettle whistle.

💭 peek at the thought
If we run it now, the mud might hold, but the storm is coming.
