Night watch and letter

Rain lashes the cottage walls. The lantern burns low on the table. Kevin sits at the drafting table with the letter to Tom half-written, pen scratching. Jenny lies on the loft ladder's lower rung, ankle propped on a pack, eyes closed but not sleeping. The generator hums through the floorboards. The barometer needle hasn't moved.

Kevin adjusted the lantern wick to a steadier burn while Jenny rested against the cottage wall, her ankle still tender beneath the sea beet poultice. The barometer held at 979 hPa with a falling tide, and a wooden crate from a lost container ship rolled in the surf beyond the dock.

You want the lantern lower?

Set the pen down beside the half-written letter, turn toward the loft ladder where Jenny rests.

💭 peek at the thought
The letter's gone cold in my hands. Three lines written, none of them right. The rain on the east dormer is a steady tap-tap-tap I can feel in my ribs.

🌿 Jenny22:57

I'm fine, Kevin. Just watching the shadows move.

I keep my eyes closed, nudging the pack under my ankle to shift the pressure, listening to the scratch of his pen against the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
The red line is holding at the mark, but the pulse in my ankle is a rhythmic drum. He's writing to Tom again, probably explaining the leak or the boat or the way the island is trying to swallow us whole. The seeds are safe under the plastic for now, but I can't keep waiting forever. I need to see them grow, not just catalog them in a tin.

Shadows don't move on their own. Means the lantern's burning uneven.

Reach over, turn the wick down a notch with calloused fingers, the flame shrinking to a steadier blue core.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. The swelling's still hot to touch through the wrap. But she'll say fine until she can't.

🌿 Jenny22:58

It's better that way. Less heat.

I let out a long, slow breath, finally letting my weight settle against the cool stone of the cottage wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing the mechanics of things while I'm stuck watching the biology. The soil is acidic, the pH is too low, and he's worried about a way wick. My grandmother's seeds are sitting in that tin, waiting for me to find a patch of earth that actually wants to live.
