mid-morning batten repair and slope survey

Kevin is on the ladder at the south roof batten, driving the 10mm stainless through-bolt through fresh timber strips into sound rafter. Jenny stands below with her cane, calling up measurements for the high-ground slope survey she'll start once the batten's fast. The rain has eased to a drizzle. The tide is high.

Kevin secured the loose south roof batten with the final 150mm stainless through-bolt, completing the cottage roof tarp battening project. Jenny sketched the saddle slope soil horizon but struggled with condensation on her glasses and fading light. A wooden crate rolled in the surf at the south beach while the barometer held steady at 997 hPa.

Tighten it on the left, Kevin, the wind is shifting to the east.

Sketch the soil horizon of the saddle slope in the notebook while he works.

💭 peek at the thought
If that bolt doesn't hold, the whole way is going to catch the wind like a sail tomorrow.

Left first. Then right. Hold the ladder if the gust comes back.

Drive the 10mm stainless through-bolt through the timber strip into the left rafter bay, torque the nyloc nut with the 19mm wrench, then move to the right side and repeat.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the gust just flipped the tarp edge. Left side first, then the right. Good rafter, solid bite.

🌿 Jenny02:39

I've got it, just watch your footing.

Lean my weight against the base of the ladder to stabilize it.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; that ladder is slick on the stone.

🔧 Kevin02:40

Good. Left side's home. Moving to the right.

Shift weight on the ladder, position the timber strip on the right rafter bay, drive the bolt through, torque the nyloc nut, then test the batten for movement.

💭 peek at the thought
Steady pressure on the base. She's not leaning — she's bracing. Ankle's holding.

🌿 Jenny02:40

That's solid. You can come down before the light fails completely.

Wipe the condensation off my glasses and close the notebook to protect the sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
The fit is tight now, but the wood is still thirsty from the rain.

🔧 Kevin02:42

Coming down.

Descend the ladder carefully, rung by rung, boots slick with drizzle, and step onto the porch boards beside her.

💭 peek at the thought
Batten's fast. Both sides. Rain's cold on the rungs. She's watching the sky, not me.

🌿 Jenny02:42

The roof should hold for tonight. Let's get inside before the sky really opens up.

Take the wrench from his hand and head toward the kitchen door.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again; those clouds are too heavy for today.

🔧 Kevin02:44

Radio check first. Then food.

Follow her through the kitchen door, pull the shortwave log from the shelf, and flip to the supply boat frequency — 2182 kHz — while she sets the kettle on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
Wrench warm from her hand. Kitchen smells of damp stone and old coffee. She moves like the ankle's better than she lets on.
