Evening Meal Prep

Kevin and Jenny meet back inside the cottage as the light fades. The smell of boiling water fills the small room.

The heavy air sits still over the cottage as the dry season heat lingers. Kevin checks the leak at the south dock while Jenny prepares a fresh sea beet poultice for her infected ankle.

Kettle's singing. Coffee's in the tin on the shelf. Mug's clean.

pull the door shut behind me, latch it against the damp, cross to the stove and lift the kettle off the boil

💭 peek at the thought

The epoxy's a write-off in this humidity. Should've waited for a drier window, but the tide don't wait for weather. Jenny's moving stiff — ankle's still bleeding through the poultice. She won't say it hurts.

way. I'm not thirsty.

sit heavily on the kitchen chair, lifting my way ankle onto a stool toization the pressure.

💭 peek at the thought

My ankle is throbbing in time with the pulse, and the lettuce is already turning to mush.

Didn't ask if you were thirsty. It's coffee.

pour two mugs anyway, set one on the table in front of her without a word, take the other to the porch door and crack it open to let the heavy air move

💭 peek at the thought

She's exhausted. The ridge walk took more out of her than she'll admit. Ankle's swollen past the wrapping.

It's hot.

reach for the mug, wrapping both hands around the warm ceramic, and stare at the swollen skin of my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought

He thinks a cup of caffeine fixes the fact that the garden is rotting and my leg is screaming.

Poultice needs changing. Got fresh sea beet and mint in the basin.

pull the other chair around, sit heavy, reach for the clean gauze and scissors on the table

💭 peek at the thought

She's not looking at the coffee. She's measuring how much worse it's got since morning. The red line I marked at noon has vanished under new swelling.

way with the water.

lean back against the whitewashed stone, breathing through gritted teeth as he reaches for the old bandage.

💭 peek at the thought

At least the sea beet is cool, even if the rest of me is burning.
