The Rising Squall

Kevin and Jenny stand under the porch overhang as the warm rain turns into a heavy downpour. The tide pushes against the newly reinforced dock pilings, and the wind begins to whip the dinghy's sail.

Kevin secured the dinghy lines at the dock as the tide rose faster than forecast, feeding slack into the bow line while the stern spring held. Jenny watched from the porch, concerned by the wind and swell, then retreated inside with her seed tin as the rain drove harder.

Boat's tied proper. Ring held at high water.

step back under the porch overhang, pull the door shut against the driving rain, set a hand on the doorframe steadying myself

💭 peek at the thought
Dock's holding. Mooring ring didn't shift at high tide. Dinghy's stern spring and bow line are doubled, chafe guards in place. Mast bracket's still slightly skewed but the through-bolts are solid. She's watching the water come up. I should say something — anything — but the words sit in my throat like grit in a cylinder.

Check the cleat again. The wind is catching the dinghy.

Trace the line of water on the window glass with a grimy finger.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tide rises any higher, the new planks will be underwater before I can even set the lime.

🔧 Kevin23:14

Aye.

walk to the door, pull oilskin from the hook, step out into the rain toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wind's shifted northeast, gusting. Dinghy's broadside to it now. Cleat on the dock took the last storm but the timber underneath's soft. Need to look.

🌿 Jenny23:17

Don't go out too far! The dock is slick!

Clutch the seed tin tight under my arm and watch him from the shadow of the way.

💭 peek at the thought
way's going to get soaked just for a boat that is already secure.

🔧 Kevin23:17

Stay inside. I've got it.

move along the dock low and deliberate, boots testing each plank before committing weight, reach the cleat and check the doubled stern spring and bow line tension

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Planks are slick as grease. But the cleat's the only thing keeping the dinghy off the rocks. I'll stay low, test each step.

🌿 Jenny23:21

The tide is coming in faster than the forecast!

Step out to the edge of the porch, letting the spray hit my face, watching the dinghy strain against the ropes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to slip. That wood is more rotten than it looked yesterday.

🔧 Kevin23:21

Bow line's singing. Giving it slack.

work the bow line off the cleat, feed two feet through slow, cleat it off again, check the stern spring still holding even tension

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Tide's pushing harder than the tables said. Dinghy's hauling on the bow line, stern lifting. Cleat's holding but the timber's singing under it. Need to ease the bow line slack before something parts.

🌿 Jenny23:25

Come back now! The wind is picking up!

Lean over the porch railing, eyes fixed on the way the dinghy lurches in the swell.

💭 peek at the thought
If that rope snaps, the current will take the whole dinghy with it.
