A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The rain continues in a steady, warm drizzle, soaking the earth and filling the tank. The tide remains high, lapping against the lower planks of the dock and keeping the path to the west sea cave submerged for now.

🔧 Kevin00:56

Kevin — walk to the back wall, check the rain tank level and the sandbag line around the foundation

💭 peek at the thought
Back at the cottage. The rain's easing to a drizzle. Need to check the catchment tanks and those sandbags before the next front pushes through. And the radio — still have to key it at 0800 for the boat's real ETA. No softening it this time.

🌿 Jenny00:57

The rain isn't letting up for tomorrow.

Sit on the porch steps, pull out the sketchbook, and begin drawing the morphology of the sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank is full, but the ground is just a sponge. If I don't dig that trench soon, the seeds will rot before they even sprout.

🔧 Kevin00:58

Tank's full. Sandbags held. You want coffee?

go to the stove, check the kettle, pour two tin mugs

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's rising but the wind's still northeast — that swell lag she noticed last week. Boat won't make the crossing tomorrow even if the captain wants to.

🌿 Jenny01:00

Yes, thank you. Black, please. Coffee would be good. Black. Yes, thank you. Black.

Stand up slowly, rub my ankle, and head toward the kitchen. Watch him pour the coffee, the steam rising in the dim light. </think>THOUGHT: The tank's full. Good.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I want coffee. I want to dig, but I also need caffeine. Maybe the coffee will help me think straight about the trench.

🔧 Kevin01:00

Here.

hand her a tin mug, sit on the porch step beside her, blow steam off my own mug

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower than yesterday. Ankle's still bothering her more than she says. Coffee's strong — last of the sealed jar from the crate.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:01

Thanks.

Take a slow sip of the hot coffee and look out at the rain hitting the south slope.

💭 peek at the thought
He's quiet today. At least the silence isn't heavy with questions. The soil is just too far gone today.

🔧 Kevin01:02

Trench held last week. Clay's tight.

sip coffee, glance at the south slope through the rain

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the slope. The drainage bed we cut, the tarp battened down. Wondering if it'll hold. I should've checked the intercept trench at low tide — see if the clay's weeping again.

🌿 Jenny01:03

It's saturated. I need to check the pH near the sea cave anyway.

Open my notebook and start sketching the way the water is pooling near the rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
Tight last week, but now it's a swamp. If I don't get the drainage right, grandmother's seeds are just expensive compost.

🔧 Kevin01:05

Four strips left. Cave's at high tide now — you'd be wading the ledge in this swell. Wait for the ebb.

finish the coffee, set the mug down, stand up

💭 peek at the thought
She's been wanting to get up to the sea cave for days. The pH kit's got four strips left. Cave clay's stable — notebook says no active seepage at 40cm and 1.2m — but if the saturation's pushing new water through the bands, the chemistry could shift.

🌿 Jenny01:05

I'll sort the seeds then.

Walk into the kitchen, pick up the seed tin from the counter, and sit at the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the tide. I'm not losing an ankle to a pH test. I should sort the seeds instead.
