The Rising Tide

The rain intensifies as the water level in the trench reaches the ankles. The shoring is under critical stress from the pressure of the saturated ridge.

The intercept shoring on the north ridge slips under the weight of the saturated soil. Kevin leaves his full weight against the pry bar to hold the shifting greenheart plate in place as the trench walls bulge. Jenny scrambles through the slick mud to retrieve the 150mm through-bolt from the east shutter, her ankle throbbing with every strained movement. The tide is rising faster than predicted, threatening to flood the lower work area.

🌿 Jenny19:35

Kevin, get the pry bar! The base is shifting!

Shoves a flat rock into the gap between the greenheart plate and the stone to arrest the slide.

💭 peek at the thought
If that trench goes, the whole north shelf follows, and the seeds go with it.

🔧 Kevin19:35

Got it.

Grab the pry bar from the tool roll by the garden wall, drive the chisel end under the leading edge of the shifting greenheart plate, and lever it back into alignment while Jenny holds the rock.

💭 peek at the thought
The clay's moving faster than I thought. She's right — the base plate's walking on the grease layer. If that greenheart shears the bolts, the whole trench collapses back into the cottage foundation.

🌿 Jenny19:37

Keep pressure! I need more stones from the pile!

Scrambles backward on her good leg to grab three flat rocks from the debris area.

💭 peek at the thought
It's holding, but the mud is turning to soup under my feet.

🔧 Kevin19:37

Hold the line. I've got the plate.

Keep full weight on the pry bar, pinning the greenheart plate against the stone Jenny wedged, and scan the slope for the flattest rocks within reach to shim the base when she gets back.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too fast on that ankle. The trench won't wait but neither will her leg. I need to hold this plate and get stones under it before the clay liquefies completely.

🌿 Jenny19:39

Don't let it move! I'm coming back!

Slams the rocks into the mud, wedging them against the base of the shoring to stop the slide.

💭 peek at the thought
If this slips, I'm losing the whole ridge to the sea.

🔧 Kevin19:39

Holding. Get the 150mm through-bolt from the east shutter — last one. We'll pin the sister plate through the greenheart into the bedrock ledge.

Keep the pry bar braced, shift weight to free one hand, and yell the bolt location over the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
Good rocks. She placed them right — angled into the clay so the plate bites when the pressure comes back. Trench is breathing now. Need to lock it before the next surge.

🌿 Jenny19:41

I've got the bolt! It's in the mud!

Lunges toward the shutter, fumbling for the cold metal with shaking fingers as she fights her ankle against the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
The rock is screaming under the weight. If that bolt shears, the whole trench is gone.

🔧 Kevin19:41

Stay there. I've got the plate. Throw me the bolt when you find it.

Bear down harder on the pry bar, locking the greenheart plate dead still against the shim stones, and extend my free hand toward her, palm up, ready to catch.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing too hard. Ankle's screaming at her and she's lunging through mud for a bolt. I can hold the plate — I've got the leverage. She shouldn't be the one crawling.
