← Day 757

the old shrine · day 757 · evening

The tide begins to turn

Kevin and Jenny meet at the trench just as the water starts to lick at the base of the northeast piling.

The warm rain continues to patter against the shrine's roof, turning the earth into a slick slurry. The tide is rising faster than the charts predicted, pushing water through the gaps in the newly-wedged stones. The shoring at the north ridge is groaning under the hydraulic pressure, with the greenheart plates beginning to bow under the weight of the saturated clay.

🌿 Jenny19:25

The tide is higher than the charts said. We need to pack the base now or the shoring fails.

Kneels in the mud, wincing as her ankle shifts, and starts jamming heavy stones into the fissure with her hands.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is too high; if that clay slips, the whole north ridge goes with the sea.

🔧 Kevin19:25

Hand me the mattock. You drive the rebar pins, I'll choke the seepage with the plates.

hammer greenheart sister plates into the mud at the base of the northeast piling, using the mattock handle as a lever to seat them tight against the clay fissure

💭 peek at the thought
The water's climbing faster than the lunar tables. She shouldn't be kneeling in this muck with that ankle, but she's already doing it. I'll backfill the base with the greenheart plates and the cribbing stones — if the shoring goes, the whole ridge follows.

🌿 Jenny19:27

Hurry up. The water is already moving through the stones.

Grabs the rebar pins from the kit and begins hammering them into the mud, using her body weight to drive them home despite the sharp flare in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If those plates don't hold, the water will undermine the whole foundation of the cottage.

🔧 Kevin19:27

Come-along's on the dock. Back in two minutes.

sprint back to the dock, grab the come-along and 10m of heavy line, run back to the trench

💭 peek at the thought
She's driving pins one-handed with a bad ankle in rising water. The tide's not waiting. I need the plates seated deeper — the mattock handle's not enough leverage. Come-along on the dock winch line, pull the plates down into the clay before the water finds the path.

🌿 Jenny19:29

We don't have two minutes! Use the rocks to wedge the gap!

Grabs a heavy flat stone and shoves it into the space between plates, leaning her full weight against it to slow the flow.

💭 peek at the thought
Two minutes is too long. The tide doesn't wait for the gear.

🔧 Kevin19:29

On it. Pass me the crowbar — I'll lever the timbers in.

grab the heaviest flat stones from the cribbing pile and jam them into the gap between greenheart plates, then lever the garden wall timbers across the top to bridge and lock the shoring

💭 peek at the thought
No time for the come-along. She's right — wedge it now, engineer it later. The greenheart plates are seated but the gap between them is weeping. Heavy stones first, then the cribbing timbers from the garden wall to bridge the plates and lock the shoring. My back's going to hate this, but the ridge goes if we don't.

🌿 Jenny19:31

Watch the left edge! It's shifting under the pressure!

Shifts her weight against the stone, gritting her teeth against the pulse in her ankle as she watches the water level.

💭 peek at the thought
The stones are holding for now, but the clay is still turning to soup.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:31

Hold the plate dead still. Don't move.

grab the 150mm stainless through-bolt, washer, and nyloc nut from the east shutter kit; drive the bolt through the pre-drilled hole in the left greenheart plate and into the clay beneath the slip plane, torque the nyloc down hard with the 1

💭 peek at the thought
Left edge is bulging — the clay's liquefying under the head pressure. If that plate rotates, the whole wall fails. Need to pin it *now*. The 150mm through-bolt from the east shutter kit. Drive it through the greenheart into the clay below the slip plane. One shot.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:33

It's not holding! The pressure is pulling it out!

Presses her shoulder against the vibrating plate, bracing it with her good leg while the north ridge groans under the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
The bolt is biting, but the mud is just screaming around the threads.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:33

Dig the anchor trench behind the plates — two feet back, eighteen inches deep. I'll prep the offcuts and rod.

snatch the mattock from Jenny's kit and start hacking the anchor trench into the ridge behind the shoring, throwing mud uphill fast

💭 peek at the thought
Single bolt's not enough — the clay's too soft, the head pressure's too high. The plate's acting like a lever, prying out. Need a deadman anchor *behind* the shoring, back into the ridge. The greenheart offcuts from the dock repair — two lengths, bolted vertically behind the plates, tied together with the stainless rod. Triangle of resistance. But I need to dig the anchor trench *now*, in rising water, with one good arm and a mattock.
