The Approaching Front

The wind begins to pick up from the east, carrying the scent of rain, as the tide starts to recede, leaving the lower rocks slick and dark.

Kevin attempted to weld the east shutter pin but fumbled due to poor alignment, wasting fuel and damaging the bracket. Jenny headed to the sea cave to scout for clay, but the pain in her swollen ankle limited her progress significantly.

🔧 Kevin21:10

Kevin — walk to the workshop, grab the welding torch and bronze rod, then head to the east shutter to weld the new pin

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing east ahead of the front — barometer at 981 and steady means it'll drop through 970 by midnight. East shutter pin still needs welding. Trench held last tide but the clay's weeping at the north end. Jenny's ankle won't take her up the slope if the intercept fails. Need to move now while there's light.

🌿 Jenny21:11

Be careful with the torch, the metal is thin there.

Lean back against the stone and sketch the way the clouds are forming over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wind shifts any further, the boat won't even approach the cove. I need to check the seals on the seed tin again.

🔧 Kevin21:13

Tacking it cold first. Won't burn through.

set up the welding torch at the east shutter, clean the hinge plate with the wire brush, and start tack-welding the new bronze pin in place

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the hinge plate's worn paper-thin from salt. Too much heat and I'll burn through. Need to tack it cold first, then build the weld slow. Good she's watching the ridge; cloud formation'll tell us more than the barometer about when the front hits.

🌿 Jenny21:14

Make sure the alignment is perfect; the salt air will eat any unevenness.

Shift my weight off the swollen ankle and wince, watching the sparks fly from the shutter.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so methodical with the hardware, but the humidity is going to fight that weld. My ankle is pulsing.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:14

Alignment's dead on. Three millimeters off true and the shutter binds at high tide — I measured.

finish the last tack weld, check the pin rotation with a wrench, then wipe the flux off with a rag and inspect the bead

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the sparks, not the cloud line. Ankle's worse than she's letting on — weight shift, the wince. Alignment's true; I checked it three times before striking arc. Salt eats unevenness, she says. Like she's talking about the hinge.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:15

If it doesn't bind, I don't have to fix it when the storm hits.

Stand up slowly, limping toward the porch to watch the sky darken.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the measurement, but the island doesn't care about his precision. The pressure is dropping too fast.

🔧 Kevin21:16

Pin rotates clean. Shutter'll hold.

grab the manual pump and walk up the slope to the intercept trench to start pumping out the tide water

💭 peek at the thought
She's framing it as my problem to fix later. Means she knows she won't be able to. The limp's got heavier since morning. Trench pump's next — if the intercept's weeping at the north end, the clay's lubricating deeper than I thought. Cottage piers after that. Light's going fast.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:17

Don't stay out too long, the wind is picking up out here.

way on the porch steps, pulling my knee to my chest, and watch the clouds swallow the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is the color of a fresh bruise. If the tide rises any faster, that trench will be underwater before the pump even clears.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:18

Back before full dark.

reach the intercept trench, set the pump intake in the standing water, and start working the handle to pump it out

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's steady northeast now — twenty, twenty-five knots. Cloud base dropping. She's on the porch steps counting cloud layers instead of resting the ankle. Trench first. Pump it, check the shoring, then the cottage piers. If the fissure's widened another centimeter since morning, the whole northeast corner's floating.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:19

The barometer is dropping too fast, Kevin. Come in soon.

go into the kitchen to find a clean cloth and the antiseptic, then sit at the table to debride the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
way's fighting the ocean with a hand pump. He's stubborn. My ankle feels like it's in a vice.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:20

Trench pumped. Checking shoring, then the piers.

set the pump down, crouch at the north end of the trench to inspect the greenheart shoring plates and through-bolts for movement, and probe the clay behind them with a finger

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's fallen four millibars since I left the cottage. That's not steady — that's a plummet. Front'll hit before midnight, not 0200. Trench water's running brown with clay fines; shoring's holding but the weep at the north end is steady. Pump's pulling air now. Need to verify the deadman anchors are still bitten, then get to the cottage piers.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:21

The tide is coming in too fast. Get in here.

apply the antiseptic to the swollen ankle, wince, and wrap it in the clean poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
way's checking for movement while the whole ridge is turning to soup. If those piers shift, the way goes with them.
