Low tide work at the foundation and piling

Rain hammers the tarp over the garden beds. The tide has turned and is dropping fast, exposing the cottage foundation fissure and the bowed greenheart plates on the north piling. Kevin has the come-along, pump, and last 150mm through-bolt ready. Jenny braces on the driftwood cane, poultice fresh, notebook sealed. The barometer reads 974 hPa and still falling. Two hours of slack water to work.

The air is heavy and still, the dry season heat pressing down under a flat, thickening sky. Kevin and Jenny are working near the garden wall, focusing on stabilizing the structure and drainage extension before the supply boat arrives. The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks and the lower reaches of the island's edge.

Watch the tension on that line, don't overpull or it snaps.

Limps toward the north piling, bracing the cane against the bowed wood.

💭 peek at the thought
The foundation is widening wider; if we don't pin those plates now, the whole cottage goes into the silt.

🔧 Kevin22:09

Pump first. Bolt goes home on the slack.

walk to the intercept trench with the manual pump and begin pumping out the standing water

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the line. The greenheart's already bowed three millimetres — another hard pull and the fibres crush. Need to pump the trench first, let the water pressure off the plates, then drive the through-bolt slow with the come-along just snug, not strained.

🌿 Jenny22:11

I'll check the stability of the wall while you clear the intake.

Kneels in the mud, clearing the weeds and debris from the base of the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If that water doesn't drop fast enough, we won't get a bite into the greenheart.

🔧 Kevin22:11

Intake's clear. Call it if the stone shifts.

pump the intercept trench steadily, watching the water level drop and the greenheart plates for movement

💭 peek at the thought
Wall's on soft clay, tide's dropping — she'll feel the give before I see it. Let her work the base; I've got water to move.

🌿 Jenny22:13

I'm watching the seam. If it groans, I'll yell.

Reaches out a hand to the wall, feeling for any vibration or shifting earth.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is pulling away from the stone; I need to see how deep the rot has actually gone.

🔧 Kevin22:13

Plates easing. Lining up the bolt now.

position the 150mm stainless through-bolt through the pre-drilled holes in the greenheart sister plates, add washers and nyloc nut, and begin tightening with the 19mm wrench

💭 peek at the thought
Water's moving. Plates settling slow — good. Clay's still saturated but the bolt hole's aligned. One shot at this through-bolt before the tide turns again.

🌿 Jenny22:15

Slow down. Let the bolt seat before you put torque on it.

Leans weight against the garden wall, watching the gap between the stone and the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast; if he threads that wrong, we're losing the whole hardware.

🔧 Kevin22:15

Backing off. Let it seat.

loosen the nyloc nut half a turn, tap the bolt head gently with the hammer to settle it, then retighten slowly by hand until resistance builds

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Threads need to find their seat in the greenheart before load hits. Back off, let it bite, then torque.
