The Approaching Squ

The first heavy drops of rain hit the dust on the dock planks as the wind picks up from the north.

The wind picked up from the east, bringing the heavy scent of salt and pre-storm humidity. Kevin struggled at the generator shed, lashing the loose tarp to the studs as the gale whipped at his clothes, while Jenny retreated to the cottage, her ankle throbbing with every slick step on the dock planks, watching the horizon blur into grey.

Rain's turning. Going to secure the dinghy and the generator shed. You want the porch side or the garden?

walk to the dinghy, check bow and stern lines, double the warp on the mooring ring

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. North wind means the swell will wrap around the east side by dark. Need the dinghy warps doubled and the generator shed battened before the tide peaks.

🌿 Jenny07:35

The porch. I need to get the tin inside.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle shifts, grab the seed tin and the notebook, and limp toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
It's going topour hard, and those seeds aren't ready for a wash in the mud.

🔧 Kevin07:36

Shutters on the northeast. Dog them tight. I'll be up in five.

pull the dinghy's stern line taut, cleat it hard, then run a second turn around the north piling base

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the bad ankle hard. Tin and notebook first — she's protecting the seeds over herself. Porch shutters need dogging before the wind gets teeth.

🌿 Jenny07:37

I got it. Don't get soaked.

Enter the way, pull the heavy door shut against the wind, and set the seed tin on the dry table.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't dog those shutters, the kitchen will be a way by midnight.

🔧 Kevin07:38

Kevin — jog up the dock planks toward the generator shed, grab the spare timber strips and the roll of heavy twine from the workshop corner

💭 peek at the thought
Door's shut. She's inside. Now the generator shed — roof tarp's only got two battens on the windward side. If that blows, we lose power and the radio. Rain's coming sideways already.

🌿 Jenny07:39

Watch the step, they're getting slick!

Sit at the kitchen table, rubbing the swollen ankle, and watch the rain start to blur the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving fast. I hope he catches the latch on the way back.

🔧 Kevin07:40

Kevin — reach the shed, kick the door shut against the wind, start lashing the loose tarp corner to the wall studs with timber strips and twine

💭 peek at the thought
She heard the planks groan under me. Good — means she's listening. Generator shed door bangs in the gusts. Tarp's flapping loose on the east corner. Need three more battens and the twine tight before the roof lifts.

🌿 Jenny07:41

Jenny — lean against the doorway and watch him work against the gale in the shed.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to rip that tarp off if he doesn't double the knots.
