A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The rain intensifies into a heavy lashing, drumming against the cottage roof as the wind picks up from the west. Kevin and Jenny head down the slick path to the dock, the air turning cooler in the downpour. The tide is retreating quickly, exposing the slippery rocks of the tide pools and leaving the waterlogged crate wedged against the pilings.

🔧 Kevin08:56

Crate won't wait. Tide's falling. You coming?

Grab crowbar and new rope from porch, head down to dock

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's still hammering. Good cover for the crate work — tide's dropping, gives us maybe two hours at the dock before the rocks go slick. Need to move now if we're getting that open today.

🌿 Jenny08:57

I'm coming. Let me grab my notebook.

Wipe hands on my apron, grab the notebook, and follow him down to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide goes out now, we can reach the sandbar, but my knees are screaming.

🔧 Kevin08:58

Kevin — walk down the path to the dock, crowbar in one hand, coil of new rope over shoulder. Rain cold on the back of my neck.

💭 peek at the thought
She's logging everything. Smart. If the trust ever reads these, they'll know what washed up and when. Might matter for insurance. Might matter for nothing. Either way, her hands move faster than mine on paper.

🌿 Jenny08:59

Jenny — shiver and pull my collar up, keeping pace with Kevin toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
This rain is relentless. If that crate has shifted in the surf, it'll be a nightmare to haul.

🔧 Kevin09:01

Watch the starboard cleat. Plank's loose there.

Step onto the floating dock, test footing on the wet boards, move toward the crate jammed against the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
Dock's going to be treacherous. Algae on the planks, swell pushing under the floats. Crate's wedged in the corner where the current eddies — saw it yesterday at low water. This rope's good, half-inch three-strand, dry. Crowbar's heavy enough to lever the lid if the wood hasn't swollen past saving.

🌿 Jenny09:01

Got it.

Step carefully onto the dock, avoiding the loose plank, and stand steady to keep an eye on the cleat.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the plank. One slip and I'm in the salt water.

🔧 Kevin09:02

Rope end to me. Quick loop around the crate's waist — under the bands.

Crouch at the crate's end, working the new rope under the bottom iron band, fingers numb in the cold rain

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's sitting lower in the water than yesterday. Swollen heavier. Lid seams are black with salt rot. Might not need the crowbar for the lid — might just fall apart. But the iron bands'll hold. Need purchase. Rope around the middle, cinch tight, use the dock cleat as anchor and lever it open.

🌿 Jenny09:02

I've got the end. Just tell me when to pull.

Lean over the edge and pass the rope end to him, keeping a firm grip on the slack.

💭 peek at the thought
He's shaking. If he slips, that crate is going to pin him against the pilings.
