← Day 77

the keeper's cottage · day 77 · night

The storm breaks in

The wind howls from the west as the rain turns to a deluge.

The heavy air of the wet season lingers, smelling of salt and damp earth. Inside the cottage, the waterlogged crate sits on the kitchen floor, seeping a trail of murky water that Jenny quickly wipes away. The tide is rising outside, pushing the surf higher against the rotting dock pilings.

Coming in.

haul the waterlogged crate through the cottage door onto the kitchen floor, crowbar hooked over shoulder

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's closing in fast. Crate won't hold the tide if I leave it on the dock. Need it inside before the water rises.

Get those boots off before you track the whole beach into the kitchen.

Step away from the stove and move toward him to help clear a space on the floor.

💭 peek at the thought
He's drenched. The rain is coming down in sheets now.

🔧 Kevin09:19

Sorry. Almost got it.

kick off boots at the doorway, then shove the crate fully inside and set it down hard, water sloshing over the edges

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — salt and mud everywhere. Better move fast before the floor's a swamp.

🌿 Jenny09:19

Careful. Don't let the runoff get under the cabinets.

Grab a rag from the counter and wipe up the puddle forming around the crate.

💭 peek at the thought
That sound... it's heavy. I hope it's not more ruined flour.
