The Rain Reaches

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated roof as the tide retreats further from the shore.

The rain has turned into a heavy downpour from the west, soaking the island in grey light. Kevin is at the old shrine, exhausted and starving, while Jenny is at the cottage tending to her infected ankle. The tide is out, exposing the rocky tide pools, but the wind-driven rain makes any movement along the shore treacherous.

The pressure is dropping fast. Check the kitchen window.

stand up slowly, walk to the kitchen, retrieve grandmother's seed tin from the high shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain gets into the tin again, the whole batch will rot before I even find a spot.

Copy that.

Walk to the kitchen window and check the barometer reading, then watch Jenny with the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the barometer in her bones before I check the gauge. The tin's been up there since the supply boat — she's finally opening it.

🌿 Jenny17:59

The tin's been sitting here too long. Let me check if any of the clay pockets could work for planting tonight. The north ridge clay's still holding above the erosion line. I'll clear a spot now.

carry seed tin toward the north ridge path, then pause at the doorway. </think>THOUGHT: I can't keep putting off finding soil that won't wash away.

💭 peek at the thought
He's watching me like I'm about to make a mistake with those seeds.

Take the headlamp. Battery's dimming.

Step back from the doorway and let her pass, then turn toward the garden wall to assess the seized auger in the failing light.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving before the rain settles in. North ridge clay holds — I helped her shore it. She doesn't need me to follow, but the auger's still stuck in the west corner and the French drain's half-dug.

🌿 Jenny18:01

I know. I'll be back before it's pitch black.

take the headlamp from the table and step out into the rain, clutching the seed tin tight to my chest.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worried about the gear while the island is what's failing.

🔧 Kevin18:01

Kevin — walk to the garden wall, pull the pipe wrench and propane torch from the tool roll by the shed, and set to work on the seized auger bit.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already gone. The auger bit's twisted shank won't free itself, and the clay's only going to set harder once this rain soaks through. Need heat and leverage — pipe wrench and the propane torch, if the gas holds.

🌿 Jenny18:03

Be careful with the torch, the mud is already slick enough.

climb the slope toward the north ridge, watching the wind catch the trees.

💭 peek at the thought
If he can't get that bit out, I'm never going to finish the wall.

🔧 Kevin18:03

Oil first. Fire second.

Scrape clay off the auger handle and shaft with the hand trowel, then soak the seized joint with penetrating oil and let it sit while I check the French drain trench depth.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — torch on wet clay makes steam, not heat. Penetrating oil first, let it creep down the shank while I clear the muck from the handle. The bit's 12mm, twisted at the shank. Might snap it clean off if I force it cold.
