A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The sky has flattened into a heavy, oppressive grey, and the humidity is rising as the wet season peaks. The barometer is dropping steadily at 980 hPa, signaling an approaching front. At the cottage, the air is thick with the smell of salt and damp earth; the high tide laps against the dock, mooring rings groaning under the strain.

🔧 Kevin17:36

Kevin — walk to the porch and check the barometer reading again, then set the kettle on the wood stove

💭 peek at the thought
The air feels heavier than this morning. Barometer's dropped four millibars since dawn — 980 and falling. She's at the window watching the garden wall. Hasn't asked about the auger. Hasn't asked about the letter.

🌿 Jenny17:37

It's going to pour. I can feel it in the joint.

Sit on the porch step and open my notebook, sketching the way the clouds are bruising over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. If that storm hits before the boat, the ridge is going to be a mudslide.

🔧 Kevin17:39

Joint's got better timing than the supply boat.

pour water into the kettle and hang it over the fire, then lean against the doorframe watching the sky with her

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's talking louder than the barometer. She's been sketching cloud formations for three days now — same ridge, same angle, different pressure readings each time. Building a record of something.

🌿 Jenny17:39

The boat doesn't care about the soil. The soil does.

Sharpen my pencil and start shading the density of the clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the boat has a schedule, even if it's a lie.

🔧 Kevin17:40

Soil wins. Always.

pull the tin mugs down from the shelf and set them on the porch rail, waiting for the kettle

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The boat runs on schedule and diesel. The soil runs on water and time — and right now the clay behind the west wall is holding both like a grudge. She's mapping the sky because the ground won't tell her anything new.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:41

Not if the rain washes them into the sea first.

Trace the outline of the north ridge in the sketch, noting where the earth shifts.

💭 peek at the thought
Only if the soil is stable enough to hold the seeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:42

The ridge held the last three storms. It'll hold this one.

lift the kettle off the fire and pour two mugs, set one on the step beside her notebook

💭 peek at the thought
That's the first time she's said "sea" in weeks. Not "water" or "tide" or "the crossing." The sea. She's thinking about what takes things away.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:43

The clay is moving, Kevin. The auger seized for a reason.

Take the mug, warmth seeping into my palms, and watch the half-cleared garden behind the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Three storms isn't four. The ground is already saturated.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin17:44

The drain doesn't go deep enough. Clay's saturated past the trench bottom. Water's running under it.

take a sip of coffee, eyes on the garden wall's west corner where the greenheart plates pulled through

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The bit didn't seize on a root — it seized because the clay at thirty centimetres down has the consistency of wet concrete and the torque twisted the shaft like taffy. I knew it when I pulled it. Didn't want to say it out loud.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:45

Then we have to dig deeper. But the soil is too heavy right now.

Draw a cross-section of the trench, marking where the water table lines are forming.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wall goes, the whole math end is lost to the runoff.
