NIGHT

The rain begins to steady its rhythmic drumming against the tin roof. Inside, the smell of chic coffee fills the small room as they wait for the tide to turn.

Kevin heads toward the north ridge with the mattock to check the copper spillway as the rain continues to thicken. Jenny remains in the cottage, sketching the shifting drainage patterns in her notebook while worrying about the stability of the soil and the moisture in the seeds.

Barometer's holding at 979. Rising slow. Might buy us a dry window after lunch.

Pour a second mug from the pot on the stove and set it on the table beside the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's steady now. Good for the tanks, bad for the mortar if I don't get stone into that drain today. Coffee smells strong — Jenny's rationing the good tin.

I need more than a window. The north ridge drainage is still shifting under the rain.

Takes the mug, wrapping both hands around the warmth, and opens the own to sketch the drainage pattern she saw this morning.

💭 peek at the thought
A dry window is all I need to finish the auger, but the soil is still a mess.

I'll walk the north ridge at mid-tide. See if the copper spillway's taking the overflow clean.

Sip coffee, then pull on the oilskin jacket hanging by the door.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The clay's weeping at the intercept trench. If the tide pushes salt water back up the slope, the new beds go saline. Need to check the spillway extension before high water.

🌿 Jenny19:02

Watch your footing. The shale is as slick as glass today.

Watches him head out the door, then turns back to her sketch, shading the area where the soil is most unstable.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out there now with the slope saturated, he'll trigger a slide.

🔧 Kevin19:02

Aye. Mattock's at the wall. I'll take it.

Grab the mattock leaning against the garden wall, step onto the porch, and start up the path toward the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
Shale's treacherous when wet. She knows every loose plate on that ridge — mapped them all last season. I'll take the mattock for balance and test each step.

🌿 Jenny19:03

Don't get too close to the drainage line!

Sighs, picks up her pencil, and begins to embolden the contour lines on the map.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too stubborn for his own good. That ridge is a sponge right now.

🔧 Kevin19:04

Staying on the bench. Not stepping on the lip.

Climb the path past the garden wall, mattock in hand, boots testing each shale plate before committing weight.

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the undercut at the drainage line. The clay's hollowing under the shale lip — one bad step and the whole plate goes. I'll stay upslope and probe with the mattock handle.

🌿 Jenny19:05

If it starts to move, I'm not way out to get you.

Leans over the notebook, sketching the precise way the water is pooling near the north drainage.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's using the bench. But the whole slope is heavy with the rain.
