Evening radio check and storm prep

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table as dusk presses against the windows. The shortwave is warming up on the bench. Outside, rain begins to stipple the roof tin and the wind shifts southeast, driving cloud low over the north ridge. The supply boat window opens in three days.

The air is heavy with the humidity of the wet season, and the overcast clouds press low over the cottage. The barometer has dropped to 977 hPa but is currently rising, suggesting a momentary lull in the pressure. The tide is out, exposing the slick rocks of the south shore, while the supply boat's arrival is still a full week away.

Radio check at eighteen hundred. Boat's due high tide day after tomorrow, two-hour window.

Pour two mugs of coffee from the pot on the stove and set one in front of Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. The window's tight but the barometer's rising — 977 and steady. If the wind holds southeast we'll have a lee on the crossing. Need to get the ditch bag finalized and the Yanmar's spare impeller in it. Jenny's ankle's holding. She's quiet tonight.

"I'll check the radio after I finish this sketch of the drainage line." unrelatedDO: Jenny wraps both hands around the warm mug, letting the heat seep into her palms while she watches the rain blur the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. If the boat doesn't come, I'll have to start rationing the corned beef next week.

Sketch can wait. Radio's first. If the skipper's moved his window we need to know now.

Sit opposite her at the table, blow steam off my own mug, and wait.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been at that sketch since noon. The drainage line matters — if the north wall weeps again we lose the lime beds. But she's tired, the ankle's swollen again after today's work. Coffee's good. Quiet's good.

🌿 Jenny18:53

I know. I'm getting up now.

Jenny sets her pencil down on the notebook and stands up, walking toward the radio on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the weather doesn't care about my drawings when the tide is turning.

Kevin — sip coffee, watch her reach the shelf and power the set, the glow of the dial lighting her face in the dim.

💭 peek at the thought
She moves slower than she used to. The ankle, the damp, the months. She'll do the check proper though — she always does.

🌿 Jenny18:55

Be quiet, I need to hear the Tom's frequency.

Jenny adjusts the dial slowly, listening through the white noise and the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
If the static is bad again, I'm going to lose my mind.

🔧 Kevin18:56

Kevin — set the mug down quiet, don't move, let her work the dial.

💭 peek at the thought
Tom's frequency. She's listening for him, not the supply boat. Hasn't said his name in months. The rain hammers the roof tin — static'll be bad on 2182.

🌿 Jenny18:57

Wait... I think I have him.

Jenny leans closer to the speaker, her hand hovering over the dial as she filters the static.

💭 peek at the thought
There's a voice under the hiss, just barely catching it.
