The Approaching Rain

The temperature drops slightly as the first heavy drops of the wet season hit the dust on the garden path.

Jenny cleared a stubborn root from the garden auger just as the rain began to fall. Kevin inspected the north ridge drainage to ensure the spillway held, while Jenny took soil samples along the garden wall.

Kevin — walk up to the north ridge to check the copper spillway extension

💭 peek at the thought
Wet season's here. Need to get the spillway checked before the ridge turns to soup.

🌿 Jenny19:39

Gotta clear this root before the clay gets unworkable. The rain's just starting.

grab the crowbar and chisel, walk to the stuck auger at west garden wall corner, wedge the chisel into the root and lever it loose

💭 peek at the thought
The first real rain of the wet season - I need to get that root out before it becomes impossible. Kevin's checking the spillway extension, which means I'm alone with the auger and the stubborn root blocking my progress.

🔧 Kevin19:39

Watch your back. That root's got tension in it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — clay turns to grease once it's wet through. Root's been holding that wall back long enough.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:41

Right you are. This wood's got spring in it.

reposition the crowbar to work with the grain, lever carefully rather than forcing it, listen to the wood's response

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin's warning about the root's tension - I can feel the stress in the wood, the way it's bound up tight. Better listen to him.

🔧 Kevin19:41

Kevin — walk over to the garden wall corner, wedge the crowbar beside the auger shaft, lever the root free from the bit

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's reading the wood, not fighting it. Spillway can wait five minutes.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:43

Thanks. That's got it. Now we can dig proper soil tests.

examine the freed root, note its diameter and condition, then inspect the auger shaft for damage before starting proper digging test holes at 40cm intervals along the north wall base

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin's already moving on the root - perfect timing. His hands know what this wood needs.

🔧 Kevin19:43

Auger's still good. Bit's sharp.

💭 peek at the thought
Root's thick — thumb-width, sound. Auger shaft's twisted but the bit's still cutting. She'll get her tests. I've got a spillway to clear before the water finds its own path.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:45

Appreciate you checking that. I'll get these samples in before the mud gets too soft.

mark the first test hole location with a stake, insert the pH testing tube 40cm deep beside the freed auger hole, record the reading in my notebook, then move to the next location

💭 peek at the thought
The auger's still serviceable - that's one less thing to worry about. But Kevin's heading back to the spillway, which means I'm alone with the digging.

Kevin — walk up to the north ridge to check the copper spillway extension

💭 peek at the thought
She's methodical. Good. The ridge won't wait though — copper spillway's the only thing keeping the north face from washing into the garden.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:47

These readings better show me what's holding up the garden.

dig the second test hole at the marked location, collect soil sample for immediate pH testing, record data in notebook with timestamp, then collect a third sample from the clay shelf area to compare stability readings

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin's gone back to the spillway extension - I need to make these soil tests count while the ground's still firm enough.

Kevin — walk up to the north ridge to check the copper spillway extension

💭 peek at the thought
Three samples won't tell her what I already know — the clay shelf's holding, the wall's weeping, and the spillway's the only relief valve that matters. Rain's picking up. Time to move.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:49

Just need to get these three samples logged and I'll know exactly what I'm working with.

collect soil core from the clay shelf at 40cm depth, label with GPS coordinates and timestamp, place in preservative jar, then sketch the horizon layers visible in the dug hole for my soil stability map

💭 peek at the thought
Kevin's checking the spillway extension while I work the soil tests. I need to get samples from the clay shelf before the rain softens everything.
