Squall Tea

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with tin mugs of hot tea. Rain lashes the windows. The generator runs. The garden wall trench is flooding outside. The barometer reads 982 and rising. They are wet, tired, and hungry, watching the storm through the glass.

The rain lashes against the cottage roof with a heavy, rhythmic drumming, making outdoor work nearly impossible. Inside, the air smells of damp wood and the sharp medicinal tang of the sea beet poultice. The world outside is a grey blur of wind and water, leaving the pair retreated to the small shelter.

Tea's strong. Good.

💭 peek at the thought
The trench is refilling faster than the clay can take it. Three days to the boat. She's quiet — good quiet, not bad quiet. Let her be.

It's hot. I needed it.

Take a slow sip of tea, wincing as the movement shifts, and sketch the pattern of the root's grain in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain; if that trench doesn't hold, the whole ridge is lost to silt.

Root's oak. Quarter-sawn grain. Means it came from the old fence post at the northeast corner — washed down in the '22 storm.

sip tea, glance at her sketch

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping it. The root, the clay, the water paths. Same way she mapped the sea beet glands. Doesn't talk while she works.

🌿 Jenny20:09

Quarter-sawn oak... (pause, then quieter) ...same storm that took the old fence.

Trace the root pattern in the notebook with a firmer line, then reach for the seed tin E on the table and hold it without opening it.

💭 peek at the thought
Oak from a washed-down fence post, quarter-sawn grain—he's right. That means the drainage trench cuts through the same saturated layer that failed in '22.
