← Day 782

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the north cliffs

Midday Dock and Cliff Work

Kevin stands at the dock inspecting lines, while Jenny is perched on the cliffs sketching the erosion crack.

Kevin walked the garden path toward the north ridge to meet Jenny, noting the fish run in the shallows off the dock. Jenny descended from the cliffs, her ankle holding under the poultice, and paused to watch mullet flashing near the surface. They met at the ridge path junction as the tide pushed higher.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You pull the dock rope taut, feeling the tension in each strand. You check the mooring ring, noting a slight looseness that could become a problem if the tide rises.

🔧 Kevin03:20

Kevin — walk back toward the cottage, checking the starboard stringer scarf joint on the way

💭 peek at the thought
Ring's moving maybe a millimetre under load. Oak wedges are holding but the mortise itself is spongy. If the supply boat hits it hard at high tide, the whole assembly could walk. Need to sister the seaward piling before the boat comes — greenheart cores are staged, bolts are staged. Tide's rising. Two days.

🔧 Kevin03:24

Kevin — climb the porch steps, pour the last of the coffee from the kettle into a tin mug, and sit on the porch bench with the radio log notebook

💭 peek at the thought
Scarf joint's tight. Epoxy held. No weep at the glue line. The greenheart sister plates are still under the tarp at the winch — three eight-foot cores, straight grain, dry. One fifteen-hundred-millimetre stainless through-bolt left. That's it for heavy fasteners. If the south piling needs more than one bolt, I'm improvising. Barometer's steady. Boat in two days. Jenny's at the cliffs. She'll want the radio log when she comes back.

🔧 Kevin03:28

Kevin — stand, stretch the stiffness from my lower back, and walk down the garden path toward the north ridge to meet her halfway

💭 peek at the thought
Coffee's gone cold in the mug. Radio log shows last contact three days out, captain acknowledged 2182. Barometer 984 and steady — that's the worry. Steady means it's not deciding. Could hold, could drop. Supply boat needs a window. Two days at high tide. If the front stalls, they won't risk the crossing. Greenheart cores are dry. Drill bits are sharp. One bolt. South piling first, then the starboard stringer knee if time. Jenny's been gone two hours. North ridge crack widened four millimetres yesterday. She'll have new numbers.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the north cliffs

You sit on the ledge, notebook in hand, and carefully map the widening crack. You watch the wind stir the salt spray, wondering how the erosion will progress.

🌿 Jenny03:19

Jenny — sketch a detailed cross-section of the tension crack, noting the depth and the displacement of the loose topsoil.

💭 peek at the thought
If that crack moves another centimeter, the whole ridge is going to slide into the own. I need to stabilize the soil before the boat arrives.

🌿 Jenny03:23

Jenny — close the notebook and stand up slowly, shifting the weight off my ankle as I begin walking back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is growling louder than the wind. I need to eat something more than those dry limpets.

🌿 Jenny03:27

Jenny — wipe the grit from the pencil and tuck the notebook into my bag, starting the descent toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is getting darker. I need to get back before the rain really opens up.
