The Low Tide Interval

The rain begins to taper off into a light mist. They have a few hours before the tide turns and the supply boat is expected on the horizon.

The rain turns from a drizzle to a heavy, driving lashing from the west, blurring the horizon over the dock. The tide is surging rapidly, lifting the dinghy high against the mooring line while the oak wedges groan under the pressure. Kevin stays anchored to the dock, watching the tension, while Jenny retreats to the dry of the cottage to signal the boat.

Boat's on the tide. Two hours, maybe three. You stay off the dock planks — I'll hump the stores.

walk to the dock mooring ring and test the oak wedges with a firm boot heel, checking for any shift in the mortise under the rising tide pressure

💭 peek at the thought
Rain easing. Tide's still rising — supply boat due on the high water. Need the dock ring solid before she comes alongside. Wedges are in, doubler plate bolted. She'll hold. But the south planks still need doing. And Jenny's ankle won't take hauling stores up a slick jetty.

🌿 Jenny04:09

I'll check the Yanmar housing one last time while you watch the line.

way picks up her notebook and the tin of seeds, then limps toward the cottage, favoring her good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If those planks go under the weight of the crates, the whole way is lost. I need to get those replaced before the crane swings.

🔧 Kevin04:10

Housing's done. Bronze seat's in, adapter seated. You check the radio log instead — boat's ETA, weather window. I'll watch the ring.

lean against the north piling, arms crossed, eyes on the mooring ring mortise where the six oak wedges sit driven vertical-grain, watching for any hairline shift as the tide pushes harder against the dinghy's doubled stern springs

💭 peek at the thought
She's stubborn. Ankle's clean but the tendon's still knitting. She thinks I don't see the limp. Yanmar housing can wait — injector seat blank's machined, bronze adapter fitted. Nothing's sailing without the dock holding.

🌿 Jenny04:11

Just tell me if the ring starts pulling. I'm going to check the radio.

Jenny turns back toward the cottage, her boots crunching on the gravel, and she clutches the seed tin tighter against her side.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the engine, but the wood is still like a way. If the boat hits hard, that whole jetty is going right into the water.

🔧 Kevin04:12

Ring holds. Go on.

stand fast at the dock edge, one hand on the north piling, tracking the warp tension on the dinghy's doubled stern springs as the tide surges, the oak wedges invisible in the mortise but the steel doubler plate showing no rust-streak moveme

💭 peek at the thought
She's carrying the world in that tin. Seeds, soil sketches, the letter from the trust she won't let me read. Radio log's on the high shelf — dry, charged, last entry three days out. Boat captain acknowledged 2182. Window's high tide, two hours. I'll give her the space. Ring's solid. Wedges bit deep. Doubler plate's four 150mm bolts aren't going anywhere.

🌿 Jenny04:13

I'll be at the radio.

Jenny enters the cottage, the door creaking shut behind her, and sets the tin on the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
He trusts the wood, but I see the rot. If that dock gives way, I'm losing the heirloom seeds to the salt.

🔧 Kevin04:14

Kevin — shift weight to the good knee, boot heel pressing the dock plank beside the mortise, feeling for vibration in the timber as a larger swell lifts the dinghy hard against the doubled springs

💭 peek at the thought
Door's shut. Radio's warm. She'll log the boat's bearing, check the barometer trend, maybe try Tom's frequency again. Last time she keyed it, static only. I didn't ask. She didn't offer. The letter in my pocket has thirty-seven creases from folding and unfolding. Mother's death. Six months late. Tom's handwriting, shaky. The supply boat skipper held it — forgot, or didn't care. I found it at 0200 on the porch step. Never opened it. Won't. Not here. Not now.

🌿 Jenny04:15

Kevin, watch the pilings!

Jenny sits at the radio, her fingers trembling over the dial as she clicks the static to life for the weekly check.

💭 peek at the thought
That lift was too deep. If the bolts shear now, the whole thing is going into the cove.
