The Approaching Front

The sky has turned a bruised, heavy grey as the wind picks up from the east, carrying the scent of imminent rain.

Kevin secured the dinghy and reinforced the dock lines during the low tide before the weather turned. Jenny stayed at the cottage, monitoring her infected ankle and documenting the approaching storm front in her field notes.

🌿 Jenny07:21

The pressure is dropping too fast today.

Lean back against the stone wall, wincing as the movement pulls the infected skin, and sketch the cloud formation over the ridge in the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If that rain hits before I finish the map, the whole northern slope will be a mess of silt.

🔧 Kevin07:21

Barometer turned. Reckon we've got a couple hours. You stay put — I'll run the dock lines and the dinghy.

walk to the dock and check all mooring lines, double the stern spring, and secure the dinghy bow and stern with the spare warp

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pressure. Barometer was 994 and rising this morning — now it's turning. Fast drop means the front's accelerating. We've got maybe two hours before the rain hits hard. Need to secure what's loose on the dock and get the dinghy lines doubled before the swell builds.

🌿 Jenny07:23

Don't stay out long, the rocks are slicker than usual.

Watch him from the porch, nursing the throbbing in my ankle, and feel the weight of grandmother's seed tin in my lap.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always rushing to Fix the world while the island eats me at the edges.

🔧 Kevin07:23

Won't be long.

work the dock lines methodically — double the stern spring with the spare half-inch three-strand, serve the ends with sail twine, check the bow line chafe guard, and cinch the dinghy's storm anchor warp tighter to the mooring ring

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong — the green slime on the seaward planks goes treacherous when the wind drives rain sideways. But the dinghy's our only way off if the medevac call goes out, and the dock holds the radio mast. Both need to hold.

🌿 Jenny07:25

Just watch your step on the algae.

Trace the rusted edge of the tin with my thumb, feeling the grit of the seeds I'm still too terrified to plant.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks securing the boat will stop the tide, but the island doesn't care about knots.

🔧 Kevin07:25

Cleats are good. Bow line's fresh.

give the dinghy bow line one more turn on the forward cleat, test the tension, then walk back up the dock toward the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching my feet, not the sky. The algae on the seaward stringers is bad — I've felt it give way under boot before. But the dinghy's bow line has been sawing on the chock all morning. If it parts in the swell, we lose the boat and the engine both. One more turn on the cleat, then back.

🌿 Jenny07:27

Come back inside. The air is getting heavy.

Shift my weight to avoid the pressure on my ankle, hiss through my teeth, and pull the notebook closer to my knees.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the boat is tied down, even if the rest isn't.

🔧 Kevin07:27

Coming in. Kettle on?

step onto the porch, wipe boots on the mat, and enter the kitchen

💭 peek at the thought
The air's thick with salt and coming rain. Wind's backed northeast — bad for the dock exposure. She's hurting bad and trying not to show it. The infection line was past the pen mark this morning. Antibiotics need time. She needs to stay off it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny07:29

It's on the stove.

Reach for the tin to hide the sketches, my fingers trembling against the cold metal.

💭 peek at the thought
It's already warm, but I won't tell him.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin07:29

Right.

lift the kettle from the stove, pour two mugs, set one on the table in front of her and take the other to the porch step

💭 peek at the thought
Hands shaking. She's hiding the notebook page — the sketches. Saw her tracing the tin's edge. Whatever's in that tin, whatever she drew, it's got her spooked. The fever's driving the tremor, or it's something else. Kettle's singing low. I'll make the tea, let her be.
