Rising Tides
The tide continues to rise, covering the lower rocks where the heavy wooden crate is wedged.
Kevin secured the waterlogged crate with a double-wrapped bowline and hauled it to the dock face against the current. Jenny monitored the line tension from the dock while favoring her injured ankle.
Kevin — walk to the south end of the dock, grab the half-inch three-strand rope from the coil by the piling, and wade out to the crate to secure a bowline around the rusted hasp while the water's still shallow enough to stand.

Kevin, watch the current! The bolts are galling!
Stand up from the table, wincing at the ankle, and walk to the edge of the dock to watch him.

Get back. Sit down. I've got the line.
Wade deeper, the cold water biting at my thighs, and cinch the bowline tight around the crate's hasp before the surge takes it.

The current is pulling too hard, use a double wrap!
Lean over the railing, gripping the rough wood until my knuckles turn white, watching the tension on the rope.

Double wrap it is.
Feed a second turn around the hasp before snugging the bitter end, then haul the crate toward the dock face hand over hand, keeping the line clear of the prop.

Watch the edge! Don't let it swing out!
Shift my weight on the good leg, feeling the throb in my ankle as I watch the rope strain.
